Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Confirmed for WiiWare on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has been revealed to the world. The game, planned as a comeback of old-school Sonic, was previously codenamed Project Needlemouse and is a platformer based on a 2D plane with 3D models. A teaser trailer and an interview about the download-exclusive game now known as Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 are now online, with more information soon to come.

You can view the trailer for the HD versions below:

Despite past rumours, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 and its follow up episodes will indeed be heading to WiiWare, running in full 480p, whereas its counterparts on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 will be running at 1080p. Other than those differences however, SEGA intend all versions of the game to be given the same treatment, much like Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing.

Sonic will use his Spin Dash and Homing Attack to blast through a series of Zones inspired by the original Mega Drive titles. The game's storyline will continue directly from the end of Sonic 3 & Knuckles; after destroying the Death Egg and saving Angel Island, Sonic is taking a well-earned holiday exploring a new territory...until Dr. Robotnik/Eggman reveals himself as a fellow survivor of the previous battle and launches a new assault, pulling Sonic right out of relaxation and into retaliation. Special stages will be making a return, and completed levels will be selectable directly from the main menu so that you can play your favourite sections again and again.

For those dying to know more, here are a few snippets from Gamespot's interview with Sega's Ken Balough.

GS: The subtitle is Episode 1. Does this mean it's episodic content?

KB: As mentioned, I think the best way to view it is as a first part in a much larger adventure. When Sega released Sonic 3, ultimately it was the part 1 of a story that saw its conclusion in Sonic & Knuckles. In that same spirit, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is a bigger story, and this is that first chapter. I think it's also safe to say that by the end of the episode one, fans will be very excited to see what's in store for episode two!

GS: Why did you decide to make this a downloadable title?

KB: In recent years, we've seen a huge surge of classic game properties making a return in this arena. [Downloadable] games offer players a chance to play terrific games without breaking the bank. It's also a promise to Sonic fans. We're going to deliver a Genesis-era Sonic game as if it were created today that goes to the core of what classic Sonic fans desire. This means [the fan] gets to judge us on our work each step of the way, and we plan on delivering that goal in a big way.

GS: Will there be any differences between the different versions? That is, will the Wii have motion control, or will the PS3 and 360 run at 1080p?

KB: For all intents and purposes, the games are designed to be identical. There are a few differences per what each console can output visually: Wii will be at 480p, while the XBLA and PSN versions will run at 1080p. However, for certain areas of the game, the Wii will be able to use motion control, and the PS3 will be able to use the Sixaxis.

Be sure to read the full interview over at Gamespot, as there are lots of interesting bits for anyone excited about the game.

With a clean mix of 2D and 3D visuals, and the music grounded in the 16-bit era, Sonic 4 could either make or break Sonic's big return to gaming gold. Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 will be hitting download services this summer, and you can also follow the game on the official website.

Yes, because Sonic1>2>3>Knuckles really had massive new features between them.
Great games, but mostly it was just new maps+new character each game.

Different characters offered different gameplay styles. Sonic 2 introduced SuperSonic and Sonic 3 introduced multiple paths depending on who you played as. Not even the Mario series has done that yet.

Definetely looks promising but I need more gameplay then this to get a real opinion. I'm a bit more excited about the game now so hopefully some more gameplay will be shown in the next few months.

Yeah i would of liked tails and knuckles, but it looks like this one is just sonic, atleast, episode 1 will be ;P I'm guessing their going to put them in one episode at a time and make the levels unique to the characters you choose, and maybe, do a "lock on" feature where if you have say sonic ep 1 and ep 3, 3 having knuckles, you can play ep 1 with knuckles. Maybe, prehapes, i dunno. Smilie

Oh man that would be awesome. Lock on with episode 2 to play as Tails! Smilie

They did say they really wanted to take a Sonic and Knuckles style approach for it...

At looooooooong last we have the confirmed name of "Project Needlemouse", Sonic 4. I am glad that it has continuity of the Genesis games. A follow up from Sonic and Kuckles. The only thing that I don't like is the fact that the game has 3D character designs instead of 2D ones. On SEGA US's home page there is more information later this evening, such as another character, Zones and other information. Also on sega.com/sonic4 there is another unconfirmed platform. I wonder what it is? So hears to SEGA after all of those long months of waiting. Now all we need is a release date for the game.Smilie

The unannounced platform is most likely the iPhone/iPod.
I'd usually be all over that since I love handheld gaming, but playing games all with a touch screen is just plain awkward and annoying.

Shame it could not be the DS. I think that would be a lot better. But I have a feeling the Iphone has better compatability for HD graphics?

Not exactly, but SEGA love the iPhone lately and it is quite powerful considering how small it is.

Well at least Wii owners get the game. I would have liked it to be a boxed game and not an arcade game. Saves on money.Smilie

I was also thinking that perhaps Tails and Knuckles may be introduced in other episodes. I like the idea of perhaps then being able to use them in previous episodes too.

The other platform I imagine could be the iPhone as well, but PSP is always a possibiity. The PSP's widescreen would suit it well.

If it was gonna be on DS or PSP, they already would of said so, the only reason to hide it would have some kind of shoick value and iphone i think is too obvious an answer to bother hiding it. I'm guessing it's either just unconfirmed release for Steam or it's the iPad

I don't think it will have any other characters. It might but I wont hold my breath.

Well, if it's not a DS/PSP or iPhone, then the only logical conclusion is that it is for a Dreamcast Portable.

But I want to know what its price and content are. If it is 500 points for a few levels, I might not bother getting it. I'd rather pay full price for a complete game.

The unannounced platform is obviously the DS2. Smilie

Loving the idea of lock-on welshwuff, would make a lot of sense if they go down that route. Even without it, hopefully they'll include at least Tails and Knuckles in later episodes

Definitely can't wait to see more footage!

In terms of gameplay bits, wouldn't mind wall jumps, not so sure about manual boosting (would prefer more rings = faster)

Can't really fault SEGA for this. They're just giving the fans what they've been asking for.

They should include Tails and Knuckles. Both really cool characters in their own right. I had no problem with them only the extras in Sonic Adventure including shadow sonic.

I also loved the Chaotix crew. Not sure why but i thought they were cool in the game and in the comics.

PLEASE SORT OUT THE RUNNING ANIMATION ITS STARTING TO REALLY BOTHER ME

Wait, what, Sonic 4? What was Sonic & Knuckles then? Sonic 3.5?

Looks alright I guess. Will try the Xbox demo at least.

Yep, Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles were originally one game until they split it due to time constraints. When you lock both games together to get Sonic 3 and Knuckles, you get what the game was meant to be.

@Andrezao, I just finished a report on 2D video games in the market, they tend to sell considerable better as downloads, world of goo for example only gain 2% of their sales from retail shelves, 60% of it was wiiware, the rest being steam and their own website.

Indeed, however, I think it comes down to branding. For example: World of Goo, It's a one of a kind game, nothing we've seen before, no iconic characters. No doubt it would sell well as a download than a retail copy.
But, this sonic is like NSMBWii, it has a famous Iconic character, a massive franchise, has nostalgia. Which of the 3 systems sell more nostalgia? The Wii for sure. Then marketing, consumer awareness, hype. It could sell Millions if done right, if they keep it NSMBWii simple, if they market it well. Proof of that: NSMBWii- 10m sales and growing. NSMBWii wouldn't sell half as well if they did it as a Wiiware title that's for sure.

Yeah they really need to fix the running animation. The stylized cartoon versions in the original games look much better. The animation when his feet start to resemble a circular blur is much nicer to look at, plus it really conveys the sense of speed. He looks a bit sluggish in this trailer.
