2D Mario Wii Tops Super Mario Galaxy on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Nintendo's latest Mario platformer, New Super Mario Bros for Wii has overtaken sales for Super Mario Galaxy in the US.

Since bringing refreshed 2D-styled Mario to the market 45 days ago,the game has sold over 4 million copies and has now snuck past the two year old Super Mario Galaxy, according to NPD sales data.

  • Super Mario Galaxy - 4.1 million
  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii - 4.2 million
Granted the Wii is far more popular with a wider audience than it was back in 2007, but achieving what its 3D brother has done in just over a month can certainly say something about a desire for classic plumber love. New Super Mario Bros. does boast a highly addictive multiplayer mode, has been pimped out to the masses and even comes in its own red box.

Which game and style of Mario do you prefer - the epic grand scale and beautiful worlds set in Mario's 3D adventure, the classic side-on platforming in New Super Mario Bros, or both? What do you think of the sales situation between both games?

So.....? It's not lik Galaxy sold 10 copies or somethingSmilie

It only makes sense. It's a 4 player classic style Mario game. It doesn't mean people don't value a game like SMG. It just means a 4 player game that follows the basic rules of 2D Mario platforming that everyone knows by now has more mass appeal. People are entitled to their preferences. Maybe if SMG had really poor sales, I'd be worried.

Nah it's just that obviously more time and effort went into SMG (It was GOTY material) and then a DS looking up port beats the crap out of it.

But like it was said on the previous, there weren't as many Wii owners when SMG came out. So Galaxy 2 might shift shed loads.

Just to add my two cents... both are fantastic games, personally I do prefer Mario Galaxy but both Galaxy and New Mario are worth having and playing.

They were designed to be different and who gives a flying fuck weather or not both of them have big sales figurines?

4 Million each is good for Nintendo and it shows them that Mario is still needed, and that's even why there's Galaxy numero deux! So all in all who cares? Both games are good and more incentive for Ninty to make more - e.g. Galaxy 2.

Parlez-vous Français? I can see you aren't English native but your right it's a win win for the devs and the gamers unless Nintendo decide to use the earnings to make a Pace Maker peripheral and bundle it with WiiPaceMake! patent pending.

I dont know why we are complaining that one Mario game sold more than the other. Either way you look at it Mario kicks ass and they are both fun games to play. Can't we just agree to that?

Mario, Mega Man and Rayman FTW!!!
