Resident Evil: Dark Side Chronicles - First Trailer (Update) on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Capcom's recent comments of Wii-owning Resident Evil Fans to be 'very happy soon' have been explained in the latest issue of Famitsu, with Dark Side Chronicles.

Update 1
Additional details from IGN:

  • Darkside Chronicles takes place in Resident Evil 2's Racoon City - city turned to hell due to T-Virus.
  • Players control Claire Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy in on-rails, Umbrella Chronicles styled play.
  • Enemy no longer Umbrella (hence the different title), focuses on darker areas of the RE story and character history. More horror compared to the original.
  • Scenarios from RE2 will be included, with various past characters including Shelly Birkin.
  • Makes use of the Havoc engine for realistic physics.
  • Replayability being improved, and also accessibility for newer players. Seasoned shooters can use the dynamic difficulty system from RE4/5 for a tougher experience.
  • Parnter character shown on screen infront of you - in single player mode.
  • Game is about 35^ complete, without a final release period set.

    Update 2

Fresh from Capcom's Resident Evil 5 Event today comes the first footage of Umbrella Chronicle's sequel.

    Original Story
From what can be gathered from the scan of the article, Dark Side Chronicles is a direct sequel to Umbrella Chronicles, and will be set out in the same way: as an on-rails shooter. It will also be made by the same development team, Cavia. The scan shows both Clare Redfield and Leon S Kennedy, showing that Dark Side Chronicles will cover the events of Resident Evil 2 (or quite possibly, the Degeneration Movie) that were omitted from the first game. Code Veronica is also expected to be referenced in this title, judging from the recent comments of a Capcom Employee.

More is set to be revealed on this game on the 12th of this month, as Dark Side Chronicles is expected to be properly unveiled at an event at that time.

Are you happy for an Umbrella Chronicles sequel, or would you prefer a game in the style of Resi 4 Wii Edition?

Easy answer, I want another resi4 style masterpiece.

Will not buy this one. A proper resident evil or no resident evil for me...

Agreed, for the most part. I'm gonna wait for more news on this game before I dismiss it completely though.

At least the scans look good. Smilie

Capcom have a strange idea of us being happy... I think I would be very happy about other things related to Resident Evil. Like Resident Evil Wii exclusive, part 6.

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Good to hear something new's coming to the Wii, bit too early to judge it based on a scan, but good to see something more than a regular port.

:/ idk what to say ill wait and see what storys it have in it

Dissapointing to see another outsourced, on-rails Resi game that ignores the success of RE4 Wii Edition.
That being said, Umbrella Chronicles wasn't a bad game, it was pretty fun in co-op... just doesn't match a proper, traditional Resi game.

Obviously I realise that Capcom couldn't release RE5 for the Wii, at least they are still developing for the Wii.

Guess it was too much to ask for an updated Resi 2 remake with motion controls...

ARG! Damn you capcom!! I hope this fails so much in sales!!! I'm sooo pissed!! They are literally throwing $h!* on our faces!! GIVE US SOME GAME WITH GOOD EFFORT NOT ANOTHER LIGHTGUN! far out, so many arcade shooters now... So Annoying!!
Damn! This was supposed to make us happy?? You will not be getting my money Capcom.

Meh, not my kind of Zombie game.

Can't say I wasn't expecting it, I did assume they were talking about something bigger though. UC is probably really good, but we deserve better. Maybe Dark Side will turn out to be that game we deserve, but it sounds like it'll need a good few improvements.

Umbrella chronicles is a really good game, if a little too hard unless you're playing co-op. This should be quite good, if they make it a little easier while playing single player, and the story should be quite good since we may not know most of the story this time.

    A must:

    - Faster paced sections, less repetitive enemies
    - Online co-op

I\'m actually quite surprised as I was expecting an RE4 styled remake of 2, 3, or CV.

While I would prefer an RE4 styled game, I am one of those people that very much enjoyed RE: UC and am quite happy with this announcement. I was disappointed that the original UC didn\'t cover any of RE2, RE: CV, or RE4. Perhaps this one will throw in some chapters covering parts of RE5 (which will be as close as us Wii owners will probably get to having RE5).

Overall, I am one very happy Wii owner, but I do understand the unhappiness some of you are feeling, as the light-gun genre is being very represented on the Wii (perhaps at the cost of traditional FPS\'s & 3rd person shooters/adventures).

Hadn\'t thought about that, definitely agreed.

UC is a great game and looks and plays fantastic for most of the game so I\'m happy to see the same treatment given to the other RE games that were left out in UC.

They probably shouldn\'t have hyped it up as much as they did though as a lot will be really disappointed that it isn\'t a proper resi-type game.

Yes yes It can turn out good, but I think we deserve more than another on rails. RE4 sold better than UC, why not make a game like that? OH YEAH!! because it takes time and effort! Dah what was I thinking?!

Andrezao is in Rage mode atm.
What does the scouter say about his rage level??
    IT'S OVER 9000!!!! :-x

I'm pretty happy tbh, I loved playing umbrella chronicles although I did sell it just to get some cash.
I always wondered why there were no bits of resident evil 2 and code veronica in umbrella chronicles but now I'm really happy, claire FTW!
We got RE5 coming out in like 2 days anyways so I'm really happy Smilie

SmilieI can\'t believe people are actually happy with this. Just the look of the crosshair screams on-rails. TBH after the DreamCast died I was done with on-rail shooters(still done with them now). I\'m really hoping this turns out to be in the style of RE Dead Aim. That style of gameplay seems to be made for Wii more than On-Rails, but clearly Capcom can\'t see that.Smilie

    EDIT:

So it\'s now confirmed to be on-rails. Sounds like a no buy to me. Please let it rot on the shelves so Capcom will put more effort into RE Wii.

    ( Edited 11.03.2009 14:32 by J Tangle )

I will buy it but with a bit of hate in my heart...

I do not want game companies thinking a light gun game takes the place of creating an "actual" game for us Wii folk.

Im already dismissing this and heres why: I hated the first one. It was boring. I cant be bothered messing with the plastic wrap that has to be sealed to return it to Game for a cash refund.
Capcom said RE fans would be happy so either a) they are retarded b) so detached about what the fans really want. C) or just dont have the guts to say they dont want to invest too much on a game fans want on wii. I dont want loads of mini games/ light gun games filling the shelves

I AM SO FUCKING SICK OF RAIL-SHOOTERS!!!!!!!!

I think Capcom's reasoning is more like:

    - Wii is owned by children
    - Children are easily amused
    - Free money through zero effort
    - ???
    - Profit!

Umbrella Chronicles but with less games covered.

This just in: when Capcom said fans would be very "happy," they meant "pissed off."

UC was okay. It wasn't amazing. Rail shooters generally aren't. But they're even worse with survival horror.
House of the Dead: Overkill is amazing. Know why? Because it dosn't take itself serious. The game is freaking hysterically funny. And it's meant to be.
But what exactly is the point of SURVIVAL horror when your character RUNS FOR YOU? Just know where to point and when to press, and that's about the extent of rail-shooting gameplay. It would even be better if it was a new game, but it's not. I played Resident Evil 2. I don't need to play it again, minus being able to walk freely. I have absolutely no interest in that. Sorry.

    Don\'t say I didn\'t tell ye so!

Guess it was too much to ask for an updated Resi 2 remake with motion controls...

    Ye want ANOTHER Resi remake/rehash/port/etc.
I\'m sick of the Resi series it\'s being totally milked, port port port port port port port port port port. I\'d prefer an on-rails with a new story than a wii-make of resi 2.

    ( Edited 12.03.2009 00:04 by Birdo Is A Tranny )

As much as I think another rail shooter is NOT what I want, I'd also rather have that than another remake.
Not that this one really counts, since it's set during RE2. It'll explore things not related to Umbrella? The only way I see them adding anything remotely interesting would also require absolutely demolishing the canon set up in RE2 and RE4... like Leon is going to learn anything in Darkside and magically never mention it again across the rest of the series.
Rail shooters feel more like toys than games. Give us something real, Capcom.

I think that this will be an improvement on the first Wii RE game. But UC was ok but really great. I will have to see what the upcoming footage will be like.

I would be happy with Capcom coming up with an original RE Wii title done in the style of Dead Aim with elements of RE4. IMO I think that would work great on Wii, but those are only my dreamsSmilie
