SEGA's latest Nintendo DS Role-Playing entry on the DS, Shining Force Feather, hits Japan this month and has just been rated by Famitsu magazine. The team of four reviewers really took to the strategy-based title, developed by Flight-Plan, the group most famous for its sterling work on the Summon Night RPGs, and gave it straight 8s, for a total score of 32/40. Thanks for 1UP's translation work, the summary of the review can be seen below:
You kind of know what to expect from this series by now - it's a strategy RPG, but one sufficiently different from the pack to still seem original after all these years. The battle system is well-refined. You can get away with simple regular attacks at the start, but you need combos and 'union' attacks later on or you'll be helpless...It's interesting how your standard strategy RPG tactics won't work here.In a genre filled with similar games, the battles get more fast-paced and exciting as more people join your army, something seen only rarely in games of this type. Also the excellent story has comedic moments at regular occasions, although the game's challenge might be an issue as the balance is a bit severe, but rewards perseverence.
With Phantasy Star 0 already confirmed for a Western release later this year, as well as Sands of Destruction coming in the next few months, no doubt Shining Force Feather will follow suit as SEGA looks to challenge Square Enix for strongest RPG supporter on the dual-screen platform.
