'Hard' games are becoming a bane of the video game industry.  I can't count how many games I have played or reviewed that masked poor game design under 'challenge'.  You see this is platformers more than most.  They crank up the difficulty to hide the fact the game underneath is not that good.

I love the souls games, but I belong in that (small?) group of people who believe that difficulty settings are a must. Have your 'Normal' be whatever you want, but provide other options for those who need them.

And yeah, I agree with Eric, lots of devs hide their badly made game under 'Hard.' Git Gud isn't an argument

Yeah, that's certainly one of the caveats that I had in mind when I wrote that. It all has its place and I do love souls, especially 1, and recognise the difficulty in that game is part of the point but I like to see inclusivity considered in games too.

I love a hard game, but I don't need there be a challenge for gameplay to feel engaging or rewarding. Case in point, basically the whole Kirby series. Great review! I've been itching to start up Forbidden Land

Whats interesting is in my mind I hold the souls games as an exception as they are purposely designed around punishing combat.  Specifically its platformers that are often complete trash because they control worse than Simon from Castlevania 2 on NES and they justify it as 'skill'.
