Mostly true, but its hard not to put Nintendo in that category too at the moment.
Splatoon look pretty unique atm, but I am not sure what else Id say looks truely new from Nintendo right now.

ps. Completely off  topic and spammy, but if anyone here is a fan of Little Big Adventure or Alone in the Dark, the original creators are trying to crowdfund a new horror;

I would say that isn't wholly true. Sure it's the same franchises but they do utilise new ways of playing. Look at 3D Mario's. The fourmula is similar as in a platforming based level and get a power star but the tools in 64,Sunshine and Galaxy were all different.

Zelda could seem a little repetitive as puzzles do seem a little similar from game to game but at least the visual art style evolves.

For once I'll defend Nintendo's rigorous policy of not releasing old franchises unless there's a new idea. Sure an online experience in Fzero with 29 other racers would be new but Nintendo want something definining different than putting GX in HD and releasing an online element...even though that sounds like it would appease many I wonder how many would actually buy it or how sites would review it. Unlike Wind Waker which was warmly received!

Nintendo are putting their eggs in the amiibo basket and hoping that this would open up new ways to play...for me I think it's more a cash cow. We also don't know what is going on behind closed doors with things like the QoL project!

But yes, Assains creed, CoD, FIFA are all great series and obviously popular year after year but do get incredibly repetitive. I tend to play CoD and Fifa on a bi-year cycle but don't play it religiously like others.

Nintendo are guilty of rehashing ideas; but then again coming up with a whole variety of new ones - whether it's gameplay, artstyle, hardware etc.

That said, I wouldn't be against Nintendo releasing sequels that simply improve on visuals and add new content - like Star Fox, F-Zero etc. They could make a decent return on some of these games that, whilst aren't Mario or Zelda, would still do pretty well amongst the fans.

Gaming has become a little boring for me, I must say, Smash 3DS and MK8 were the last big releases for me, yet I haven't been as compelled to them as when Brawl / MK Wii came out, for example.

Oh, absolutely.
But then there was Galaxy2...which was ok if you view it more as a "level pack".
And then all the NewMario games.

Its not that any of these are bad - not by a long shot - but its hard to say they are as innovating as what came before before.

I think 1 Zelda a generation has so far done ok mind, theres normally substantial new things in each.

Maybe Nintendo needs to do a large bunch of smaller/cheaper games to try to develop some new ideas. If a concept works, expand it too a full game?

I think that's what they have thought about Captain Toads treasure tracker. It's turned from a mini game into a fully fledged title.

New super Bros series is their milk! Sales figures on those games are high. I think Nintendo are hypocritical really because if their games were even getting near FIFA or CoD then they would annualise it like how EA and activision have...oh wait...they have, rehashing old Pokemon games into the last games engine and adding a few things here and there.

JB - perhaps gaming has become boring because of such a wide plethora of games to play. The good thing about the N64 and GC is that the release schedule was copable to keep up with. I would 100% games and have enough time to enjoy them before moving on. However when you are older the games market expands even more because you have more money to spend on other systems, more games and more responsibilities.

This is why I have a massive backlog because I still think I can play games like I was 15! I just can't keep up! I have a 30 game backlog on my 3DS/DS alone! :O
