Do you think there has been much difference without the Sega console front?
I'm not so sure.
Sega set the mould for this generation gaming I feel.
I think unfortunately for sega the timing wasn't so good: people were still enjoying the PS and N64 era and a change was too sudden I think. It was exciting though, something almost revolutionary but of course had its quirks. In terms of competing against other formats, publisher rivalry, to be honest I think that Sega dropping out the home console front hasn't done much - i.e. not much difference. They seem to have established themselves as software/arcade publishers much more prominently today.
How many of you really think Sega would still have a chance in the hardware industry?
I think they've had their fair run at things, a good stab at best. Now's perhaps not the time to consider a DC2 or anything like that unless there's something unique to add to the already chunky industry.
Would the Dreamcast have done better if it was released alongside Playstation2?
The DC did pretty well I'd say. As I noted before the timing I feel was a little too early. It did have and still has a large fan base today, perhaps that would have some affect on the sales. It had superb hardware but the games I think were a bit of both really - the majority seemed too "Sega" - the image they had were along those lines, which perhaps would still have put Sega far behind Sony.
Although Sega has a typical game company name that's more of a home name than anything Sony has the quality reputation behind it and perhaps why its sales are remarkable even today. But shifting back to the question in-hand, I feel that Sega would have done just a little bit better if not creeping up onto Sony at times. Maybe the DC's lifespan *could* have been longer, it's likely, and there would probably have been quite a bit more potential for follow-up hardware of some kind.
And finally, which is better, GameCube or Dreamcast?
I think it's down to the quality and type of games on the format - I think the GC does have a better range of games but the quantity in each category is perhaps less than you'd expect. As for the DC I feel that the range maybe a little narrower but there are perhaps a lot more titles that have something distinctly Sega about them.
What's better? No idea - both have their good and bad aspects.
Oh, and I may get a DC from my mate with the likes of Shenmue, SC2, JSF etc soon.
