It's about 6 years since Sega's last ever console was released...

Do you think there has been much difference without the Sega console front?

How many of you really think Sega would still have a chance in the hardware industry?

Would the Dreamcast have done better if it was released alongside Playstation2?

And finally, which is better, GameCube or Dreamcast?

Do you think there has been much difference without the Sega console front?

I'm not so sure.
Sega set the mould for this generation gaming I feel.
I think unfortunately for sega the timing wasn't so good: people were still enjoying the PS and N64 era and a change was too sudden I think. It was exciting though, something almost revolutionary but of course had its quirks. In terms of competing against other formats, publisher rivalry, to be honest I think that Sega dropping out the home console front hasn't done much - i.e. not much difference. They seem to have established themselves as software/arcade publishers much more prominently today.

How many of you really think Sega would still have a chance in the hardware industry?

I think they've had their fair run at things, a good stab at best. Now's perhaps not the time to consider a DC2 or anything like that unless there's something unique to add to the already chunky industry.

Would the Dreamcast have done better if it was released alongside Playstation2?

The DC did pretty well I'd say. As I noted before the timing I feel was a little too early. It did have and still has a large fan base today, perhaps that would have some affect on the sales. It had superb hardware but the games I think were a bit of both really - the majority seemed too "Sega" - the image they had were along those lines, which perhaps would still have put Sega far behind Sony.

Although Sega has a typical game company name that's more of a home name than anything Sony has the quality reputation behind it and perhaps why its sales are remarkable even today. But shifting back to the question in-hand, I feel that Sega would have done just a little bit better if not creeping up onto Sony at times. Maybe the DC's lifespan *could* have been longer, it's likely, and there would probably have been quite a bit more potential for follow-up hardware of some kind.

And finally, which is better, GameCube or Dreamcast?

I think it's down to the quality and type of games on the format - I think the GC does have a better range of games but the quantity in each category is perhaps less than you'd expect. As for the DC I feel that the range maybe a little narrower but there are perhaps a lot more titles that have something distinctly Sega about them.

What's better? No idea - both have their good and bad aspects.

Oh, and I may get a DC from my mate with the likes of Shenmue, SC2, JSF etc soon. Smilie

The Dreamcast was an awesome console, but way to ahead of its time. It was too soon for most gamers still using N64, PS1 and even the Saturn to buy another console.

And it came to long before the PS2 to make any impact or keep up at all. Since the launch I knew it wouldn't have a long life span, I picked one up about two months after Sega announced they were stoping production.

I got four games, one memory card, two pads, the console and net surfing equipment for

The Dreamcast was an amazing console. It had some really great games like Soul Calibur, Skies of Arcadia, Samba de Amigo and who could forget Crazy Taxi? Anyone who loves games should own, or have owned, a Dreamcast.

Anyway, now I think Sega should stick to making games, great games and not just half-arsed sequels. Maybe later they could make another console, but at the moment if they did it just wouldn't survive.

DC was let down by the controller on many games, they broke far too easily.

I think the DC failed almost entirely because of the lack of EA support, no FIFA or Madden.

Some DC games were amazing, Radiant Silvergun for example. It took the PS2 a good year of life to come close to the graphics of Soul Caliber on DC.

Amen to that

I would absolutely love to see Sega go back to making consoles - when it was Nintendo vs Sega - that was perfect - two fairly even companies dedicated just to games - those where the days. I also think without a Sega console, there isn't really anything to compare Nintendo to.

beam has a good point. But there would be no point now, Sonic games are going multi-format now, so what would be left for Sega to dish out on their very own console?

They could always make new characters.

Or how about a return for NiGHTS, or even Shenmue?

I knew someone would bring up Shenmue...

Sega and Nintendo are very similiar in their 1st party games. They aren't like Sony's and Microsoft's games.
It would be cool if Sega released one last console

im surprised saga have'nt already released a new console, because the graphic capabiliteis way back in 1998 were amazing, meaning now they could make a console that could easily rival the gc or the ps2. Smilie
