Well to be fair, fighters haven't been performing very well on 3DS, and they may have performed a bit better on Vita, that's the impression I get.
Personally, even though I thought SF4 on 3DS was all well and nice, I can't really play a fighting game on a portable console. I like the comfort of larger controls for these.
Why cancel this game for the 3DS in favour of a system that's still on life support?! It's just a matter of time before the Vita is buried and forgotten anyway...

While the system itself may not sell well, software for it sells about just as well as it does for most 3DS games. Not every 3DS game sells in the millions of copies like Animal Crossing in Japan. Most games we would consider "major" in the core gaming milieu sell a couple hundred thousands copies at most, and that's about what the most interesting Vita releases manage to sell in Japan, despite the much lower install base. Looking at the frequent sales charts over in Japan (OK perhaps not the most recent ones) shows this.
