£79.99 with two Wii Remote Plus controllers, Wii Sports and Wii Party is a fantastic deal!

Earlier this month Nintendo confirmed a surprising new Wii hardware revision for Europe - the same sized console without support or inputs for older GameCube games.

I thought it was supposed to be smaller. Like the power unit isn't hosted in the Wii so surely they could've done something. Just look as the PS2 Slim, possibly the best revision ever. It's no bigger than a sandwich.

Still, exceptional value.

Nintendo's product description states it's exactly the same size, not one millimeter difference apparently. Definitely agree that a slimmer Wii could have been neat, especially as they're insisting it sits horizontally (which is weird as I always sit it horizontally when playing GameCube games).

Still I agree - £80 for a Wii, 2 motes, 2 games is a steal at that price.

They probably want to save money on production costs, I'm betting the new wii will have the exact shell as the old one.

What I don't understand is why they are releasing this, the WiiU is literally just around the corner. They are cannibalising their sales for the WiiU next year, it ridiculous.

Because Nintendon't listen to their customers.

Removing the gamecube bobbins reduces the cost of production - anyone buying a wii now probably has no idea what the gamecube was so this makes a lot of sense. A cheap to produce box which retilers will sell at a crazy low price. They'll grab a few more customers before the wii dies next year and make as much money as they can in the process. This makes a lot of sense.

I guess removing Gamecube support whilst maintaining the original design will be the most cost effective, but it's just plain lazy. There's no reason why someone who already owns a Wii would buy it. Had they put a little effort into making a much smaller version, many current owners would be enticed into buying it. The Wii is small as it is, so a tiny version would be extremely cool.

Wait, will the Wiimote(s?) be WM+??

And where does it say it includes 2 controllers? Where does it even say it includes a nunchuck??

Damn, that would KILL during the holidays!

@jesusraz: It has just the one Wiimote Plus, right? Don't think they'd include all that since the only constant in all Wii SKU around the world is the "1 Wiimote and 1 Nunchuck" rule. Still, two games, a wii and a full controller for £79.99 would easily shift 1 million consoles.

@Angus: Don't be so sure about that. I got a Red Limited Edition Wii two months ago for the living room since I sold New Super Mario Bros Wii for $40 and the bundle came with a free copy. I also got the bundle for $120 which made it an even better deal.

A non GC-BC extra Wii at that price would be something I'd snap up in a heartbeat if I didn't already own two.

They probably just ran out of Gamecube bobbin parts and so they are just cutting it and sticking it in the same shell.

Wow, that's a great price. It really looks like Nintendo is gonna follow the same route as Sony with the ps2.

Since I sold my Wii and will be missing out on Skyward Sword this winter, I'm thinking of getting this... or shall I wait for Wii U? Is the remote Wii remote plus?

Get a second hand Wii for the same price or less with GC support.
WiiU is too much of an unknown to wait (for all we know it might also start really expensive then drop down - might not come with a wiimote/nunchuck either)

Also, theres more to the Wii then Skyward sword now.

I'd definitely try to snag a cheap Wii, Irfy. Do you have GC games? If you don't have a GC any more then maybe do what Darkflame says and get a preowned Wii. Otherwise, get this cheap GC-less unit coming out with Zelda: SS at Chrimbo. There's a fair few decent enough Wii games that make £80 a bargain for the system.

Should have cost that much in 2006. It's just a GameCube, pretty much.

I just sold most of my GC games, last 2 I sold were Wind Waker and Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes, both getting good prices. I jus want the console to play Skyward Sword on and nothing more to be honest, if it's cheap, Ill snag 1 up but might just look to borrow the console of somebody in the short run.

That's fair enough if you've gotten rid of your GC and Wii games. Sounds like not much else interests you until the Wii U really, excluding Zelda: SS. So unless you could get a good deal come Christmas, trying to borrow off a friend might be a good idea. Then you could snag the game pretty cheap for yourself by the time Wii U comes out.

Aye, I would have kept those GC games, but when I heard WiiU won't have GC support I thought no point keeping em, they will up on the Virtual Console one way or another.

You'd only have to rebuy them again though, and you know Nintendo will charge stupid prices. That's if they even bother whacking GC games up for download.

You didn't think keeping your Wii or GC to play GC games might have been better?

Well at the time, I needed the money though I didn't much from them I don't regret getting rid of them as I've played those games to death and hardly touched the Wii. Don't miss them to be honest, they will pop up in the future just like many classics nowadays. Only thing will get me excited for a Wii now is Skyward Sword but even that is not really helping, judging by the videos... it's a bit meh... im a huge Zelda fan and been craving for a new game ever since Twilight Princess but this game hasn't fully got me yet.

Now for this new Wii, if it's at a good price, I'll snag 1 up for christmas.

That's fair enough. Was only thinking it would be a bit grim paying for GC games again if they did come out online.

Zelda might end up being really good. A lot of people seem a bit meh about it, but with any luck, it'll take everyone by surprise. I'm sure everyone on here will let you know how it is when it arrives.
