I was searching around and stumbled upon this thing. The trailer makes it look very good. A bit surprised that no one else noticed. (Or I haven't noticed that anyone else noticed lol)
Well, it's not terrible as a stand alone game. But as a sequel (which it sadly is) to Sonic 3, just comparing it makes Sonic 4 feel and look like some fake hack made by people who have never played Sonic 3 and Knuckles. I've never seen a direct sequel take sooo many steps backwards. It's unreal.
But that's just episode 1. While that episode will forever be a turd, episode 2 may be much better. We'll just have to wait and see.
This looks great. For my money, Sonic's best "look" was in Sonic 2. It was the same basic sprite as from Sonic 1, but his stumpy legs were fixed, and generally the frames were rejigged a little. I didn't like his Sonic 3 sprite much at all. He looked too smooth and rounded, to me.

I guess it might have different ideals, but I've followed what are known as 'Total Conversions' (or 'TC' for short) in the Doom and Duke Nukem 3D communities. In these projects, when they're trying to recreate something, they stick as close as possible to the original content, just brushing up things here and there.
Maybe this project has much the same ideals - spruce up the sprites, re-sequence (and possibly re-arrange) the music through modern software, jobs a gooden. No 'added levels' or such which may stick out very badly from the original content. See Earthworm Jim HD for examples of the latter.

What was the problem with Sonic 4? Haven't really followed that game at all since it was announced.
Looks pretty decent, but still a bit "off" in places (some of the animation). Good effort tho, heard some of the tracks in the project and seen some of the sprite designs - is coming along nicely.

Weird physics (though that doesn't affect gameplay too much), stupid uncurling, slippery controls and generally boring and rehashed levels. Sluggish and not very exciting - it's kinda "Sonic 1 Remix" - though that in itself has been done by fans, and far better too..

To expand on what JB said, the main problem for me (and many others) is that the physics are completely different to the classics. When you release the d-pad, Sonic loses all forward momentum and drops from the sky like a tank. Basically, rolling into a ball is now useless as it loses your speed.
Uncurling means that Sonic is always vulnerable when ever he rolls of a ramp, forcing you to use the slow homing attack.
This video explains very well:
Then there are the hundreds of speed boosters played everywhere. Most for no reason at all. At one point there are 3 boosters pushing you downhill.
Finally, Sonic only (no tails or knuckles) and 100& rehashed zones and bosses aren't really what you'd expect from a direct sequel. £10.50 for each episode.
Some say us 'haters' are nitpicking but you can't help but notice the massive inconsistency between games. Anyway, I shouldn't complain too much, I got the game free using a download code Sega gave me. 8)
3:20 I think he really drove his point home.. that's just not right ...Hm.
Very valid points that this man makes here.
So it appears that they fucked up the physics. Oh man, they should have used him for game testing... or me. I'd absolutely love that... or what about beta? Did they do any game testing at all? Or just not enough?

They've said that this was a low-budget game used to test the download market. What a way to use a highly anticipated sequel.
I think the low-budget and the lack of proper direction from the producer messed it up. The developers DiMPS used the physics set up of their most recent 2D game Sonic Rush. All they've done is taken Rush, removed the boost function and slowed Sonic down in a bid to make it look classic.
Then there's the guy in charge, Iizuka. He did great with Sonic Colours but it's like he didn't really care about Sonic 4 or really understand what kind of game people were expecting.
Still, Sonic 4 won't make the classics bad. We'll just have to pretend that it never exists. Sonic and Knuckles served as the perfect ending to the originals.
Sonic Colors and the Rush series I enjoyed alot. I never noticed things like physics because it felt pretty good. Now that you mention it I do recall having Sonic coming to a halt if I didn't push him. That never bothered me really. It's only now that you mention it that I remember.
I liked the 1st Sonic Rush as it was the only one that I played.
I think I understand people's gripes about Sonic 4. If its going to be a sequel of all the Sonic games 16(?) years ago then it should at least pay homage to the physics and level design. After all, it is supposed to be a continuation of arguable the best Sonic games of all time (which is a lot to live up to and alot of pressure!!!)
A daunting task for today's programmers to match greatness(or come close), but not impossible. Perhaps they thought they could make their own mark, but in the method was the problem. I fear they have fallen into that trap.
Maybe they'll tighten up for the next episode.

Tried playing Sonic 4 last night again, got stuck on that Lost Labyrinth level Act 2 puzzle again was there for about 4 minutes trying to do it and just gave up in frustration.
I want to so see what dimps does for the 3DS, constantly going from the bottom screen to the top screen might not be a great idea any more but I hope they keep the game-play 2D orientated.
As for that Sonic 2 HD, maybe it's because I'm looking at it in a crappy youtube video but it look just like a cleaner version of sonic 2 using that weird emulation filter if I'm perfectly honest.
