In no particular order, the following are nominees for best of 2001:

Shenmue II - Dreamcast, Sega-AM2
Max Payne - Various, Remedy Entertainment
GTA III - Various, DMA Design
Mario Kart: Super Circuit - GBA, Nintendo - Intelligent Systems
Conker’s Bad Fur Day - N64, Rareware

Again, no time limit. Pick up a couple before voting if you've got the time - many are very cheap (check out CEX's website. Free delivery on everything, £2 minimum order - 3 tiny quid bagged me Deus Ex on PC and Max Payne on Xbox.)

Vote for the best of 2000 here!

Continue.

...No Super Smash Bros Melee? o.0; Hmm Smilie

Well it's gonna be a hard choice between Shenmue II and Golden Sun, so I'll need some time to think about it.

Melee is 01/02. It will be in the next poll.

Ah tricky one with that Melee - as we're mainly Euro/UK peeps prob best to keep it to 2002 methinks

Oh hell, I have to decide between Golden Sun and Luigi's Mansion? Both were amazing games I reckon...probably gonna have to be Golden Sun...but I do adore Luigi's Mansion too. Smilie

Damn, never played Shenmue II or Rez. Smilie

But from the games I did play... Golden Sun or Conker's Bad Fur Day would get my vote. Spent countless hours on both.

I still have Conker on my list of games to buy on Ebay someday, cause God knows it will never make to the Virtual Console.

When you are only 1 of 2 people to vote for something, that is when you know your vote counts. Smilie

I eventually voted for Shenmue II; because most of my enjoyment from the Golden Sun series came from The Lost Age, which was amazing.

It is close for me on Golden Sun and Luigi's Mansion...but only for 2nd place

Conkers is by far the run away winner, by far one of my most fave games of all time! Completely different offering on the N64, one of the better titles, Live and Reloaded on the Xbox was nice and shiny, but bleeping the swear-words which made it funny in the first place is shocking. I also didnt really like the multiplayer rehash on the Xbox version.

Nonetheless the game was a cult phenomenon for me and my friend back in the day!

Golden Sun gets my vote. It's just an awesome RPG. At first the story is kind of bland, but as it unfolds, it becomes pretty interesting. Great characters, too!

I played Shenmue II on Xbox and I really wasn't crazy for it. The story was good, but the controls and some of the gameplay bothered me. There's a lot of things about the game that I would have changed. My favorite thing about the game was the atmosphere and environment of it. That was wonderful.

I played the demo of Rez...sadly I can't download it because my Xbox 360 is dead at the moment...
It seems like good fun, though. I hope I get to play it soon.

GTA3 for me. Damn hard to decide but I think that just edges it - it felt like such a step-forward at the time.

Devil May Cry. Ground breaking gameplay back in it's day, really good concepts both visually and gameplay wise and a good story to boot. Dante gets my vote!

Golden Sun for me.

Great soundtrack, great graphics and a well told story.Smilie

Golden Sun hands down

I think I will abstain this one.

Looks like Golden Sun won by 5, thought gtaIII would get more votes, but who can beat GS

Generic RPG beats Shenmue 2?

The poll is still open. Golden Sun ain't won nothing yet.

Golden Sun's clearly anything but a generic RPG.

This is a problem with other game votings too. For example, GameFAQs "best.game.ever" polls. If all the people who voted had actually played Okami it would have made it through the first round easily. Unfortunately it was VERY dead last.

Perhaps lots of people here hadn't played Shenmue II? It was a very tough choice for me.

Luigi\'s Mansion was a pretty awesome game, but I don\'t think it makes it into game of the year material.

I found Golden Sun good until I got swamped by the various Dijini (sp?) doing moves and powers and stuff. It was a bit confusing and then I got stuck and couldn\'t figure out where to go. I like my RPG\'s to be pokemon simple. Smilie

Conker was awesome, but I\'m going to have to pluck for Super Monkey Ball. I\'ve spent more time on Super Monkey Ball then any other game (with the possible exception of pokemon). The mini games were awesome and the main game was the perfect combination of frustration and addictiveness. Though I did get to the end of expert, my skills were never good enough to unlock master mode.
Still, ridiculously good game, before the series got bogged down with complications.

Edit: No Advance Wars? Smilie

No Advance Wars? Smilie
No Smash Bros? Smilie

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAh!!SmilieSmilieSmilie

Stop that. Advance Wars may or may not be in the next poll, depending on whether I deem the GBA or DS incarnation worthy of inclusion.

If all the people who voted had actually played Okami it would have made it through the first round easily.

Ah so the key is to try actually playing the games before voting! I\'m sure there\'s a bloke around here who\'s been banging on about that. Good-looking bastard. Great hair.

Problem is, easier said than done. I don't expect C3 members to pick up an XBOX/DreamCast just to play Shenmue II.

That's just the way these polls work. Popularity has an important factor

But it's not an outrageous suggestion. Shenmue? Reputedly the greatest most epic and expensive game ever made? Surely it's time to give that a whirl? Old Xboxs go for 20 quid. Anyone who owns a 360 is just a few pounds away from playing it. I don't think it's much of a stretch.

Of course you're right, they won't. But these games are cheap as chips, and coupled with backwards-compatibility and all the download services, the excuses run a bit thinSmilie Spread that love people. Take a chance. Don't get that rancid footlong from Subway on the way home - get Max Payne and Rez on one of the multiple platforms they're available for.
