Japanese Sales | PlayStation 3 Beats Nintendos Wii for a 2nd Week, Mario Top Again [news]

Glad to see PS3 doing better. Give us more competition Sony!

Nintendo always needs a bit of competition to keep them on there toes. I don't think Wiis got anything to worry about yet though. PS3's sales are gradually going back down and Wiis going back up.

That's quite a big drop for the PS3 and a nice little jump for Wii. Next week should see Wii go back above Sony's system. Apparently there are reports of existing PS3 owners simply trading in their black PS3s for the new white ones, which isn't really a good sign for Sony...PSP is doing amazing right now and could very well have some 100,000+ weeks in the festive period, if things continue this way!

Bit troublesome to see Umbrella chronicles near the top. If it doesn't do as well as Resi 4 did, maybe capcom will revert back to that game's style of gameplay.

i think as we get closer to xmas we see wii go back up japan have be wait 4 a drop in the cost so :/ iam geting a ps3 just b4 xmas

It really does seem as if Japan is all about the handhelds.

Much of the PS3 jump seems to be due to this Shin Sangoku Musou 5. What the hell is it (waits for the Japanophiles to rip into me)?

EDIT: Also, some important numbers:

DS is just 779,625 units short of the PS2 lifetime total.
Wii is just 363,506 units short of the lifetime 'cube total.

When will these totals be beaten?

Shin Sangoku Musou 5 = Dynasty Warriors 6, a series that used to easily hit a million on PS2 each time. The Bandai Namco/Koei team-up, Gundam Musou, is the other big selling PS3 game (other than Hot Shots Golf 5), with about 280,000-300,000 sales lifetime.

RE: TUC has in one week managed to get about 80% of RE4: Wii's total sales in Japan...and people are so hot for the Wii Zapper that they rushed out to buy Ghost Squad again this week and then look for RE: TUC's 'game only' package! Capcom has a big hit on its hands and this undoubtedly means more RE investment on Wii before RE5 on PS3/360 comes. It also bodes well for the performance of House of the Dead...

EDIT: tiamat, are you talking about Super Mario Galaxy or Wii? SMG had just over 500,000 units pumped into retail in its first week, so is struggling to sell through that allotment. As for Wii, it's not been supply constrained for many months in Japan now. People are expecting a large bump when Wii Fit hits on 1st December. Sadly Nintendo lost a lot of its hardcore crowd with the GameCube and they have yet to return to Wii. Instead the Wii crowd is made up by more of the DS casual market, meaning they like party games and non-games...which is why Wii Fit is likely to be massive like Wii Sports and Wii Play.

Mario Galaxy's low Japanese sales should be illegal.

I can't believe so many people have Wiis, but they don't want to own one of the greatest games of all time on it?

When will the other regions get this new PS3 model? & will the price ever drop in EU?

& FFS, Nintendo clearly can't be arsed re-colouring the Wii. I hope we at least get a Black Wii soon. a Blue Wii would be to die for :3

people should be skeptical of those PS3 numbers. Some are certainly trade ins for the white model. The numbers themselves are dropping off and wii software still out numbers PS3 software. The thing that worries me is traditional games are clearly not system sellers as far as the wii is concerned. Zelda , Mario both failing. I'm really relieved that this king of software sells in America. As it is the biggest game consumer it mean core games will still be brought out by nintendo.

I think its sad the new RE game is selling so well. Some think they will focus on a true RE game for the wii but I think it will just mean more of the same. It is so much cheaper to produce. Time will tell but a lot of existing IPs that I wanted to see on the wii (to see how developers integrated the new control setup) will porbably never be realised

Yea i'm gonna have to agree with you there meeto. Twilight Princess didn't do as well as i'd thought it would, the game was given a little too much hype anyway. And you're right about the PS3 Wii rant, i am betting that the majority of the hardware are trade-in's or at least not fresh.

Regarding Mario Party DS i am actually very impressed by it, when they announced it i was pretty closed minded since the GBA version was not worth it in the whole. But after viewing screenshots and discussing it with others on different sites i decided to open up and give it a chance and im glad i did. I bought my copy today here in the UK (just released today), played a few games, and i have to say i am very impressed with it, so worth the money. I advise party fans to give it a shot, it's selling well for a good reason.

Mario Kart DS has done pretty well.
and so has New Super Mario Bros.

I highly doubt the majority of sales will have come from people that already own a PS3. Remember when the Cube was dropped to
