Retro Game: Golvellius
System: Sega master System
Players: 1
Whilst NES fans had Zelda, Master System fans had Golvellius. In my opinion, Golvellius is the better of the two.
The story, like Zelda, sees a hero (Kelesis) off on a journey to save a princess from the evil Golvellius. The game plays a lot like Zelda with some differences. In order to face Golvellius, the player had to find seven dungeons and defeat the bosses in order to unlock crystals that can then be bought. The dungeons are completely different from Zelda. There are two different types of dungeon in the game. The two pictures below show these differences.
The dungeon on the left is a moving dungeon, you have to constantly move with the dungeon to avoid going into the bottom which would make you exit the dungeon.
The dungeon on the right is like any other sidescroller. These are the only places you can jump.
To progress through the game, you needed to enter loads of holes in the ground that would lead to places where you can heal or buy items to increase health and also to buy inportant items like better swords or crystals. To earn money, you had to kill the creatures that keep respawing in the overworld.
The music in the game is fantastic. Definately one of the best soundtracks for a master system game. The graphics are also very nice to look at.
The game uses a password save and is also an easier game than Zelda but the locations, items and enemies more than make up for it. My favourite items are the Jet Boots that allowed you to walk above almost anything, trees, water, ditches.
Overall Golvellius will always be my favourite Sega Master System game and while most would say it copied Zelda, I say that it deserves to be recognised as a great and entertaining game.
