The reason Nintendo need the bar is to allow the system to work with any form of TV.
Due to Sony only using crude accelerometers (sp?) in the actual controller they don't need to worry about TV's, but if Nintendo want to have the pointer work universally they need the bar.
Besides Sony getting all high and mighty about not needing one was just plain sad, we need to unpack a console, plug it all in and having to shove a small bar below the screen (upping setup time a grand total of five whole seconds...) isn't exactly a big deal.
Though I suppose with Phil's history it isn't surprising, I just hope he keeps a close track of the DS versus PSP sales and remembers just how "inferior" DS was supposed to be.
