Okay folks, time for a little bit of a discussion about the Game Boy Advance game Tales of Phantasia by Namco, out now in the US and due for Europe on 31st March.

Please read the C3 Preview of the game first:

Tales of Phantasia Preview - http://www.cubed3.com/news/4700

Possible areas to talk about include:

  • Have you played the SNES or PSone versions of this game?
  • Will the fact that this GBA game came out in Japan back in 2003 make any difference to sales here in the West?
  • Are you a fan of the Tales series in general and if so, what's you're favourite so far?
  • The graphics may have been revolutionary for the SNES, but how do you think it looks on the GBA?
  • What other old GBA games that have not been released outside of Japan would you like to see resurrected this year (such as Magical Vacation, Mother 1+2 or Legend of Stafi)?
  • With FFI & II, IV, V, VI and this Tales of Phantasia being ported to the GBA, what other NES/SNES RPGs should be ported?
  • Anything else you care to talk about...
  • Enjoy! Smilie

It is indeed bloody difficult in places, but just like Tales of Symphonia it's very rewarding when you get past a particularly nasty section.

What are your thoughts on Symphonia? Clearly you like it enough to give this GBA game a shot...Do you reckon others will likely think the same or will this probably just flop in the charts?

I like symphonia but it never grabed hold of me like some other RPGs, I still play it now and again. I love the GBA still, always like to have a game in the GBA slot of the DS just so i can carry 2 games around with me and RPGs provide the best value for money.
I dunno if it will flop, have a feeling it might go unnoticed as most GBA games bought now are fairly child orientated and FinalFantasy is the bigger brand, but maby Symphonia and Legendia will have helped its cause a bit.

Coming on 13th of April in Australia, definitely getting it. Loved ToS, great story and battle system, absolutely loved it.

Love how Nintendo are porting all these RPGs to GBA, portable and also many of them i haven't played yet. Just got FF4 recently. Superb.

    Yeah i got FF4 off ebay...was a copy thoughSmilie.

Only played Tales of Symphonia so far but am completely stuck on a large boss and have been for a while. So most of my time with the game is spent slowly levelling up in the hope of getting powerful enough to finally progress. Irritatingly the boss is at the end of about a 5-minute cut-scene that is not skip-able making re-attempting fairly arduous. I haven't played it for a while as a direct result of this which is a shame, should do it soon really as I'm actually borrowing the game off someone else

I saw that FFIV only entered the Aus GBA Top 10 at the very bottom of the chart, which is quite disappointing. But your charts are better than the UK one in that games actually move upwards from time to time!! Smilie

Symphonia had me hooked for the first thirty hours, then as it's hard to find the time for just one game because of my position here, I deviated and never returned. I remember playing ToP on the SNES and just getting completely stuck halfway through...Hopefully it won't be the same scenario this time!

I'd love Nintendo to bring Magical Vacation over here now that the market's more willing to accept RPGs, or even get Square Enix to port the likes of Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana...

Well, sorry to bump an old thread like this, but I feel that now the game is OUT in UK, then it should be spoken about more, rather than making a new thread, so: my thoughts!

Well, I'm surprised really, it's so different to Tales of Symphonia, but at the same time very similar, I mean you get the same battle music when fighting a summon spirit, you get the elves & the half elves (some of which still work in labs) You get the Gnomelets, funnily enough are found in the same dungeon that Gnome is found in. The battle style has changed dramatically really (from ToP to ToS) but there is only a 2D space to run around in & yet it has it's similar points.

Now, Tales of Phantasia is supposedly set a few thousand (or maybe milliong) years after Tales of Symphonia (a sequel that was a prequel!) & some of the things in the game show it.

    *MAJORIFIC SPOILERS!! Related to ToS!!*

-There are less half-elves & elves, showing that it may have been a long time, & there are less & less.
-BUT, the half-elves are no longer hated & oppressed like they are in ToS, showing that Genis & Raine's work did not go to waste!
-We finally find out what Lloyd called the tree, on his last line in ToS, he is about to say what to call the tree, & then we get the credits, well now I know that he called the tree Yggrasill, possibly as a tribute to Mithos/Yggdrasill who really wasn't ALL EVIL inside.
-I met Martel, she got dissed by Claus.

    *End*

Anyway, if you feel I should take the spoilers out of my post, do so quickly & I'll remove them, possibly put them in a link! Smilie

Now, you can tell that the graphics, music & voice clips are old & worn, but it doesn't affect gameplay at all, the voiceclips sometimes sound wierd, but they're pretty good I think! The graphics are also very good, but they could have done a lot better I feel, but I love the in battle sprites, they rule!! & the music is pretty blippy, some of the songs can get annoying, while others are cool Smilie

As for some of the other points, I think that these games should be ported from Japan for Western release:

    Chrono Trigger
    Mother 1, 2 & 3.

    EDIT 2:

More ToS related spoilers (sort of)

    ***************

-Ymir Forest is still here, & they still hate Half-elves it seems Smilie
-The Elf town in Ymir forest looks VERY similar to how it is in ToS
-Heimdall (the forest behind the elf town) Has the same music that it has on ToS, & it looks similar, as well as being easy to get lost in, & you have to get the small animals (bush babies) to help you get through!!
-I just realised that the Ninja girl called Suzu (who lives in a Secret Ninja village) has the same Sirname that Sheena does! Fujibayashi! Smilie

    ******END***********

    EDIT 3:

    EVEN MORE!! Smilie ********************************************

-The Ninja Village has the same look & music as Mizuho!
-The Eternal sword is made using the Flambert & Vorpal swords, just like in ToS! Also, Origin makes it!
    -Origin lies deep in Heimdall/Treantwood
-There is a pirate called Ifreed

    ********END*****************

I also have some super duper spoilyish spoilers to do with Dhaos (main enemy in game) they're TOO BIG, if you wanna hear them, PM me! Smilie
