LINCOLN, Nebraska (AP) -- Brice Mellen is a whiz at video games such as "Mortal Kombat."

In that regard, the 17-year-old isn't much different from so many others his age.

Except for one thing: He's blind.

And as he easily dispatched foes who took him on recently at a Lincoln gaming center, the affable and smiling Mellen remained humble.

"I can't say that I'm a superpro," he said, working the controller like an extension of his body. "I can be beat."

Those bold enough to challenge him weren't so lucky. One by one, while playing "Soul Calibur 2," their video characters were killed without mercy by Mellen's on-screen alter ego.

"I'm getting bored," Mellen said in jest as he won game after game.

Pretty awesome, and before you say he's a button basher - he learnt the moves through the sounds they make as well as what the other guys are doing too.

thats pretty cool. there is a few games i could probably play blind if I was blind. Like Super Mario Bros. MAYBE Mortal Kombat Trilogy. I dont know about SC2 though. Mostly old school games.

Juice!!!!

That's pretty cool, like a blind ninja, except with video games.

Fucking ace.

Hello!

Hmm. The Force is strong in this one.

I am impressed, but maybe he isn't distracted by onscreen happenings, and simply can concentrate on his opponent.

{Guild}Ohmdal: oops wrong chat

Timing is a vital part of it though, for him to win he needs to know the time of impact without being able to see his opponent.

Hello!

Bloody awsome how he can do that with only using sound. Amazing.

That deaf, dumb and blind kid sure plays a mean pinball....

Doesn't Mir make great sigs? I am the MOCRI (master of completely random insanity).

He wouldn't be able to play games that weren't fighters though... what a chump. Smilie

I highly doubt you would be able to play the original Super Mario Bros. if you were blind. How would you know when enemies are walking towards you, when fireballs come up etc etc? You might get past a couple of levels with hearing and timing, but I doubt you could get anywhere near completing it...

With practice, you could probably learn the timings you need, but you have to be able to see it to start with I suppose. If you play the same level in exactly the same way each time, all the enemies will be in the same place, and you just get used to it. For instance, I could probably play most of the first level of the original Sonic with my eyes closed - I've already learnt to get the timing of some of jumps by hearing the music, and I complete the level in exactly the same time every time I play it.

I never said there was anything wrong with him. I was just drawing up a likeness to what you typed and what he sounds like...
