After the disappointment that was Minecraft: Story Mode - Episode 2: Assembly Required, we came into the third episode with fairly low expectations, as Telltale's latest saga hasn't exactly blown gamers away, yet. The previous episode was a, roughly, one-hour hunt of members of the legendary Order Of The Stone, which also included a brief encounter with that pesky Ivor while trying to find Soren's hideout. How does Minecraft: Story Mode - Episode 3: The Last Place You Look continue things?
This kicks off with a bang, and, within the first 10 minutes, features more action than the other two episodes combined. The focus is entirely on finding Soren's lair, as he's the only one who knows how to create a bomb powerful enough to destroy the Witherstorm, which has been destroying the world.
It turns out that finding a secret lair is a lot harder to find than you'd imagine, as that sneaky Soren only went and set up his base in The End, as the trailer for this episode spoiled. Those who've experienced Minecraft before, will be extremely familiar with The End, as it's where hundreds of Enderman call their home, and it's no different here. These terrifying creatures will cause dozens of issues and fairly enjoyable sequences over the 100+ minutes that will be spent with this episode.
The story in Minecraft: Story Mode has been fairly hit or miss so far but it was certainly one of the most notable features in Episode 3. It feels like it's one of the first episodes where you actually make some choices that have an effect on the games progression and the characters that you meet actually start to have a bit of personality, instead of generic hero 1 and bad guy 2.
After solving many puzzles and fighting many enemies, you'll stumble across the eccentric Soren who is, undoubtedly, one of the best characters in this adventure. This odd chap is obsessed with Endermen, and has an incredible talent of turning any conversation extremely awkward almost instantly, which makes everything involving him hilarious. Soren has also created some truly incredible locations and every Minecraft fan will love some of the bizarre structures he has designed.
One big flaw about Episode 3, however, is its length. Typically, these episodes only run around 60 minutes, but this one, however, will take over 2 hours, and, unfortunately, it will feel like it too - and not in a good way. Even though it may have been action packed at times, some of the quick time events almost felt unnecessary and frankly, not that entertaining.
Minecraft: Story Mode - Episode 3: The Last Place You Look is a substantial improvement on the previous episode, and yet, it's still nothing to shout from the rooftops about, especially after taking a look at some of the masterpieces that TellTale has created in the past. This episode has helped get the story back on track, and was jam-packed with things to do, but almost felt like it was action for actions sake.
