Recap time! Episode 4 had some major character development for lots of the cast and some major reveals. Snow developed into the figure she had become in the comics, the secrets of the Pudding Pie girls being unable to share information was revealed as a magical ribbon around the neck, the Magic Mirror was repaired, Bigby found out just how far The Crooked Man's influence and operation went, and, finally, Bigby ended the episode in the belly of the beast. Face-to-face with the enemy he had hunted across the rest of the series. Here is Cubed3's review of The Wolf Among Us - Episode 5: Cry Wolf.
After the fantastic cliff-hanger, Bigby finally reaches The Crooked Man's lair, guarded by the unlikely Tiny Tim, who explains to Bigby how although The Crooked Man breaks the law, he is a necessary evil. Bigby is given little chance to think it over before he finds himself in the inner sanctum of The Crooked Man, surrounded by enemies with choices to make about what to do next...
This episode is filled with promise right from the get go, and after a tense and deep conversation on the necessity of an evil in the world of Fabletown, the action kicks into high gear. With a series filled with superb combat QTE scenes, this episode culminates with the very best examples of it - dynamic, visceral, and exciting, each with different options to take that actually have an effect on the outcome of the fight and of the story.
The episode again offers a branching set of choices, each leading to a very different outcome. The characters of The Twisted Man's cabal really are brought to the fore here, with explanations for some of their actions that will make them seem not as villainous as originally thought.
The final action sequence of this season does not disappoint, with some of the most fantastical elements seen so far. Telltale finishes strong here, really showing that the player's selections mattered. The end of this episode is possibly the highlight of the series, with the repercussions of many of the player's choices and actions coming to the fore in a fantastic sequence. This chapter shows the value of a few play-throughs.
The final episode manages to wrap up all the threads perfectly and yet still has a little secret to discover that opens up possibilities for Season Two.
The Wolf Among Us is possibly Telltale's best title. The story is fantastical and really helps craft the world for fans of the comic and newcomers alike. Apparently, Telltale has a second season in mind, but unfortunately it's delayed to 2016. Thankfully, while waiting, Telltale is (at the time of writing) releasing Game of Thrones and Tales from the Borderlands, as well as working on The Walking Dead Season 3. There's a ton of source material in the comics, too, so for anyone that can't wait for Season Two it's the perfect time to get into them. Bring on 2016!
