Ultimate Band - New Details (Wii/DS)

By Jorge Ba-oh 28.02.2008 6

The first details on the Disney Interactive Wii/DS musical project, Ultimate Band, have been unwrapped.

  • No peripherals/guitar attachments/plastic crap planned.
  • Players strum their guitars up and down using the Wii remote whilst pressing different button from four possible note combinations on the nunchuck: C, Z, C and Z simultaneously and nothing.
  • Bass players have three possible button combinations to use, C, Z and C + Z simultaneously.
  • Drummers use the Wii remote and nunchuck like drumsticks, tapping out the beat from the top and sides. No buttons will be mapped for the drumkit components to keep it simple.
  • The frontman of the band doesn't sing, but instead performs various stage antics - e.g. waving, punching to the music to get the crowd all warm and fuzzy.
  • The game features various licensed tracks, the final number still up in the air.
  • The game's online features are still unknown, but will feature a decent single player campaign, multiplayer and a practice jam mode.
  • The DS version features a different approach: users create their own music, selecting chords and the like but the game ensures that notes compliment to avoid doing-in your ear drums.

This actually sounds pretty slick, may just give it a go. The lack of peripheral may make it a little less appealing to hold, but certainly better money wise.

I need to know the song list before I commit to anything. The game could be awesome, but if the tracks aren't right, I'm not buying

    Yeah, good point.

It's great to have other music games going beside Rock Band and Guitar Hero (I'm not talking about DDR and stuff, that suerly has to continue, too!). I am rather curious how this guitar strumming works, doesn't sound bad - especially for people not wanting to spend a heck lot of money for peripherals.
It's a bit sad, that no Guitars (from Guitar Hero and Rock Band) are supported, but they may be changing the experience and may be making the game too easy, beside different colour coding (C is green? Or yellow? what?). But would be interesting to include support into the game with changing input messages on screen (not to press c but yellow for example).

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

No crap? Should be cheap (as in, normal price) then. Rock Band was really expensive.

Still, it sounds like it might be a lousy effort.

I'm a whore for rhythm games so I'll probably end up getting this.

I'll have to play it at a friend's or rent it first or something. I suppose it could be good, but from the description it sounds kind of cruddy to me.

At least you won't be able to hear the nasty sounding drums (only the game sounds, not the ugly sounds from the drum controller thing like in Rock Band).
