Nintendo News | Wii Firmware Update 3.0 (Updated: Keyboard Support, Freeloader)

By Jorge Ba-oh 08.08.2007 44

The Wii's firmware received some funky updates today, with the third revision adding some handy usability features to the dashboard and an overhaul in the Wii Shop channel.

Update: With the 3.0 update comes keyboard support, so that users can use the Wii Message Board and Shop Channel without having to point and click to type messages. Presumably the Internet channel will also receive an update to include keyboard support.

Freeloaders aren't working with the updated firmware, producing an error message. Accidental error or intentionally trying to prevent import GameCube titles from being played?

Original Update:

Changes to channels/Wii Dashboard

  • A digital clock has been added to the Wii Menu under the channel bar.
  • Forecast Channel displays the current weather condition in its Wii menu thumbnail.
  • The News Channel shows 2 scrolling headlines at a time in the Wii Menu thumbnail, and 3 clicked.
  • Today's Accomplishments is highlighted as a white message to stand out from regular messages. The calendar no longer shows new messages for it.
  • Address Book entries can now be organised by using A+B, however only moved to empty spaces.
  • Scrolling messages in the Message Board now use a different sound.

    Wii Shop Channel Changes

  • New opening screen has 4 recommended titles and the points they cost. The title bar can be clicked for a list of 20.
  • Popular titles (2 pages of 10) include launch/older games, so based on entire catalogue instead of recent updates.
  • New addition remains the same.
  • Players can search for games using partial titles and categories/genres.
  • Different platforms show how many titles have been released for each, as well as publisher and genre counters.

    Settings
  • Warning added pre-system update detailing that technically modified consoles may cease to function upon being updated. The only way to not accept an update is to power down the console by holding the button for 4 seconds.

Thanks to NeoGAF for the tip.

Good to hear that theyve updated the Shopping Channel. I was getting annoyed when scrolling through games, purchasing something at "page 6" - for example - and then having to start from page 1 again and scroll through all the pages to get to the next lot of games.

The weather/news mini window updates seem like a great idea. Theyve had idea on the everyone votes channel since it was released (always having the latest poll on the mini window) Its about time they did the same with other channels.
And good to hear theyve added a clock. Whats the point of having a date on a menu and no clock?
I know they are small things but its good theyve finally added these.

It's the little things in life that make the difference Smilie

Nice update, they are little improvements that should go a long way to making things easier.{LS]

Nothing major but seems to make somethings a little easier.

Today, my Wifi decided to go on the fritz..

Yes, some other issues are more difficult to handle. I have to check Shop Channel myself after the update, but I found navigatin in it rather annoying.

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Just noticed that the adress books first page stays stationary now. It used to confuse new Wii owners who always had trouble finding their Wii Number because they did not know to flick back. {LS]

Thing is many people seem to be noticing quite a few other things updated, or it's just in their head. Need an official list!

Word, Jayenkai. Mine's not working for some reason, it's fine with the DS though =/

If you plan on playing MP3, youll need this update (although, I think the MP3 disc can install it...Im not 100% sure about how that works though). Also, there is, uhh, something else that I think youll need this update for...and it will be appearing soon. Sorry, cant be any more specific than that Smilie.

    Goddam you!!

Duz teh update mek ma games moar mature?

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

yes, a friend of mine, who know's a friend at Nintendo service centre in Portmuth says every new Nintendo first party game will have the latest firmware as standard on the disc - for two reasons.

    1) so that less people are running the original firmware shipped with the console.

    2) so that modded Wii's can be identified and if necessary, locked out from "certain upcoming Wii" features until the mod chip/board is removed.

mp3 is still months away =(

Something that will be appearing soon? The check-mii-out channel?

Apparently the fuckers have locked out freeloaders etc, whilst the warning about modified consoles is just a bluff. Cuntage extraordinaire.

Yay another update....but not introducing sub channels or more channel space could be annoying for some (linkyshinks)

Yeah, they really need to get some subchannels. I really can't stand the idea that all your VC games just float around as individual channels instead of being organized nicely under one "Virtual Console Games" Channel. Bugs me a lot, and I don't even own a Wii yet. Smilie

Yeah I noticed that to LS It kinda surprised me at first since I was looking for it to jump forward. I also been wondering about being able to pickup things and turn pages at the same time. Is that a update or have I just not noticed it?Smilie

Have you tried entering in the passphrase key code instead of the password on the wii. I think thats only the problem if your using WEPSmilie

yay, first time i saw that blue light in like 5 months!Smilie but the thing that puzzles me is that they arent updating the mii channel w/new hairstyles and colors and eyes and mouths etc.

Really shoulda had a clock on the Wii Menu from the start, but never mind, eh.

It's a shame that I'm using the Nintendo USB Dongle, then.

they can't update the mii channel now, not unless everyone else has the update - what happens when Wii you take your Mii on your wiimote to a friends Wii who does not have latest firmware. The Wii software tries to load new style Mii's, then crashes as it doesn't understand new data.

As if that is much of a problem ^^^

0_o the update stop Freeloader from working?
