Industry News | Zelda Named Best Game Ever by EDGE

By James Temperton 03.07.2007 39

Without further ado, here is the list:

1) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64)
2) Resident Evil 4 (GameCube, PlayStation 2)
3) Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64)
4) Half-Life 2 (PC)
5) Super Mario World (Super Nintendo)
6) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Super Nintendo)
7) Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox)
8) Final Fantasy XII (PlayStation 2)
9) Tetris (Various)
10) Super Metroid (Super Nintendo)

Both the PC and the XBOX only get one entry each into the top 10 with Nintendo formats dominating. Mario alone has three titles in the top 10 with Zelda getting two.

Tony Mott, Editor-in-Chief of Edge, said:

"Ocarina of Time is nearly ten years old, but its position at the top slot in Edge's 100 Best Videogames shows that great game design does not age. In visual terms, it obviously cannot compete with today's Xbox 360 and PS3 productions, but, as with many classics, its appeal is about so much more than its appearance."

The list was compiled thanks to a poll of EDGE readers to get an accurate account of what the gaming community feel are truly the best games to ever grace disk trays and cartridge slots.

The full rundown features in a 260-page collector's book entitled 'Edge Presents: The 100 Best Videogames', on sale from Tuesday 3rd July, with a cover price of

FF VII and X > FFXII

I agree with the top spot though. Ocarina IS the greatest video game ever made.

Add me on anything. I'm always looking for new friends/opponents/town visitors/chances to appear more popular than I actually am.

Well its only their take of the greatest games...

Nintendo fans strike again? Smilie

Top ten lists are always going to have to miss good games guys...anyway, if I was to make a top ten...

1. Ocarina of Time
2. Metroid Prime
3. Halo 2
4. Starcraft
5. F Zero GX
6. Goldeneye
7. Oblivion
8. Worms (2 and Party)
9. Super Mario World (can't play it for shit nowadays though)
10. Super Metroid (for being way ahead of any ohher games in terms of complexity at the time)

Masterstyl, are you a late Zelda gamer too? Smilie Or did you just not like it?

I agree, excluding the first 2 Zeldas, which have aged pretty badly.

Anyway, sounds to me like a very generic top 10 list, not dissimilar to any other top 10 games list I've ever seen. All the games in there have prolly been in the GameRankings top 30 at some point or another.

3) Oni-Ninja
No MGS1? No FFVII? No Shenmue? No Shenmue II? No Sonic 2? No Grim Fandango? No Monkey Island? No Broken Sword? No Doom? No GoldenEye? I could go on. The point being; that list is a load of rubbish.

Beat me too it. Perfect.

Who the hell makes a list of greatest games and has ONE PC game, which is Half Life 2...Half Life 2 before Half Life 1? - I think not.

System Shock?, Warcraft?, Starcraft?, Baldur Gate?, Monkey Island?, Grim Fandango?, Fallout?, Morrowind?...

Edge is usually a great read, but this is rubbish, go take a look at Gamespot's Greatest Games for a GOOD list of games.

I'm gonna get my ass kicked for saying this, but...

FF7 should be number 1!!!

There I said it, so now I'll run for my life...Smilie

"How? Mario World was basically the same as the other Mario games that came before it"

Not really.
First use of a secondary controllable charecter (Yoshi). The shear amount of things you can do with Yoshi and the uniqueness of the gameplay mechcanics added a lot.

Fist use of Mode7 scaleing techiques (boss fights mainly). Completely new to a platform game. Static or pre-animated spries were the norm before marioworld.

The use of the key-and-keyhole puzzles to get to the secret exits were quite unique. Previous mario games basicaly had secret exits that were just "running over the top". Mario World made you think.

Far far far more of a puzzle element to it then previous Mario games. Not a specific new feature, I admit, but it gave the game a revolutionary flavor. Star Road felt quite different to any other platforming bit before.

There were multiple routes though the

MarioWorld is quite a far cry from Mario3. (which itself is hugely different from Mario2, which is hugely different from Mario1).

In fact, I guess Mario3/MarioWorld is probably the most simerla.
But they are still hugely different.

But the idea that all the mario games are "the same" is a complete falacy.

This is merely Trivial!

Each Gamer has his own taste, as well as each person who would write a list, it is clear to all gamers that some games outplay abover others, though it is also known that a game can influence a person in more than one ways, everyone who doubts final fantasy 7, or has much trouble playing through it (as I had) though the story is one often unrivaled.
Many people are not fans of the Zelda series and the trilling battles, and moves within them aswell as the story they can so cleverly interweve though the mind.
A list is more or less a representation of what they think is best, what has influenced them and im sure never be in existance be a list that everyone will agree with.

"Study this revelation, you nest of adders!"

I was very suprised to see Super Metroid in there, considering that the GBA Metroid games greatly improve upon it.

-Have you any idea what it's like to be a Fembot living in a Manbot's Manputer's world?
-What?

Ahh nostalgia, how you screw things up.

WHERE IS METROID PRIME/METROID PRIME 2????? Also, this list does say alot for Nintendo. this shows that Xbox and Playstation got ahead of it for a bit but Nintendo always comes out on top!!

Despite the cost of living, its quite popular.

You have to understand there is always going to be games that you like that are not going to make it to the list.

Lots of fighting going on amidst the comments. :/

Really, it's all a matter of personal opinion. I, personally, agree with the number one choice. Ocarina of Time is an epic adventure. Sure, it has flaws, as any game has, but the pros far outweigh the cons, I feel. Huge adventure (How did they fit all of that on the cartridge?), great (for its time) graphics, plenty of action, as well as humour and romance, challenging gameplay (hey, some parts aren't easy, especially with that f'in camera), etc. and so on.

But of course, seeing as personal opinion differs greatly, I must say, as others here have said, that I do not totally agree with the list. FF, Metroid, and RE, I do not agree with any of those.
