Industry News | Sega Grabs the Unreal Engine

By Adam Riley 19.05.2007 26

Yet another company had jumped aboard the Epic train and grabbed the rights to the Unreal 3 Engine. Just like Square Enix before it, Sega now has licensed the popular engine for use in new games. Whether or not Sega will be able to tailor this towards Wii development is unsure, though, but you have to hope something positive will come out of this for Nintendo fans.

"SEGA is pleased to arm our developers with the sophisticated tools contained in Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3. Its versatility and power will help SEGA create incredible gaming experiences."
- Simon Jeffery from SEGA of America.

"Epic is extremely excited to be working with SEGA. SEGA has a long history of innovation and leadership in our industry and we're honored that they've chosen to use Unreal Engine 3."
- Mark Rein, Vice President of Epic Games.

isn't the Unreal engine only for HD machines? i hope that could make a game out of it using up to 480p, plus it can still be used since PS3/360 games can also be played on SD tvs...

Smilie in what games are they gonna use this? super monkey ball? sonic? SmilieSmilie

There is no UE3 for Wii, how is this relevant.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

It said Industry News instead of Nintendo News, that's how it's revelant. Smilie

Mike Gee of iZINE said, "...The Verve, as he [Richard Ashcroft] promised, had become the greatest band in the world. Most of the critics agreed with him. Most paid due homage. The Verve were no longer the question mark or the clich. They were the statement and the definition."

Another shit post from Gashcroft.

Normally 'industry news' is something really big that might actually effect Nintendo-related stuff, like the PS3 launch or some massive takeover. The effect of yet another company getting a popular graphics engine for PC, PS3 and 360 is negligible.

This suggests that jesusraz has misunderstood something.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Then perhaps you can talk to him about it privately? This is a video game website, and therefore it is relevant to post news about video games. It might be a tad un-related to Nintendo, but what does it matter? If you believe it is significantly affecting the quality of the site speak with Adam about it. Just because it is a Nintendo site doesn't mean we don't care about the goings on in the rest of the industry, and further more doesn't mean someone should complain about it.

Thank goodness you're here to blow it out of all proportion.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

What a come back.

Grumbler, please can you stop criticizing our news pieces - it doesn't make you any more important, or any better then anyone else. If you haven't got any relevant thing to say, then please don't post in a topic or start really pathetic arguments.

I'm usually the one defending them.

I love this thread alreadySmilie

It's nice to know they've got a good engine, but knowing their dev teams, they're probably gonna fuck everything up anyway >.>
And tbh, I don't see any of their currently-known IPs using the Unreal Engine.. Time will tell, I guess^^

~Getting on C3's massive tits since 2K5.~

Why can't Nintendo work with Valve and just get the Source engine?? That worked ok on the Xbox so it should work on the Wii.

My guess would be the Alien FPS.

Capcom.

I bet capcom do a load in Japan.

I wouldn't know. The only licensed thing they've put out which I've ever come across, is this game I've got on my N64 called Disney's Magical Tetris Challenge, which, as you might imagine, is a Tetris clone with a bolted-on storyline, full of Disney characters. I suppose Kingdom Hearts could be counted, but that's a totally original product.

As far as Unreal Engine 3 is concerned, it's an amazing engine capable of rendering beautiful graphics. With that said, Wii owners won't be enjoying the spoils of any game running off of UE3. Simply for the fact that UE3 uses shader model 3.0, and the fact that the Wii graphics card doesn't support shader model 3.0.

Therefore, Wii cannot support UE3-based games. Don't get me wrong, this is great news for Sega fans, but it's rather ho-hum news in general since it won't affect Wii whatsoever.

Except of course Epic decides to develop an alternate version of UE3 that is fully compatible with Wii...

I don't post much, but I will appreciate any feedback on the posts I do make. Feel free to PM

Yeah, the Source engine is the best Wii can hope for.

It's called Unreal Engine 2.

Yeah, the Source engine is the best Wii can hope for.

Problem is that whereas the Xbox was easy enough to port PC stuff to because of its architecture, the Wii isn't. And the Xbox version of HL2 was a miracle.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.
