Nintendo Interview | Eidos Talks Tomb Raider Wii

By Adam Riley 17.05.2007 6

Following the surprise announcement that the Tomb Raider 10th Anniversary game is coming to Nintendo's Wii, Eidos has gone on record to discuss details of the title. Below is a small excerpt of the chat:

IGN: So let's speak a little more broadly for a moment. Why bring Anniversary to Wii now? What prompted this decision?

Bill Gardner: A couple things. One, I wanted Wii product, as you know. Let's not kid - I saw the Wii coming quite awhile ago. [Nintendo] asked me to come up and I went up with the head of Crystal Dynamics and we played with a prototype before the Wii was introduced. We were both thrilled with what we saw and played and we felt that the company needed to make a commitment to going in that direction. The problem we had was getting the development kits in time to make it happen in a timely basis with the releases we had scheduled for this year. We couldn't do that. I mean, as you've probably heard, everybody was late in getting their dev kits. Well, that piled into us also - let's not kid each other. As a result, it was impossible for us to make a simultaneous release - we didn't have the expertise to do that because we were later on getting out kits, and so on and so forth.

I would be tempted to get this, from what ive seen the controls and game have been spruced up and Lara now has some new abilities.

I was never a real big fan of the original, but i loved the sense of exploration. The PS controls and camera were so iffy, but i bought Legend on the GC recently and was pleasantly suprised how well it played.

It was just a shame it went largely unoticed by the majority of GC owners as it was one of the last gasps of the GC.

Hope this is a good port also. LS

I never liked tomb raider! I played 2 and Angel of Darkness and Thought it was overrated!

Bill Gardner seems really into the Wii or maybe he is just an outgoing guy.

This title looks pretty interesting, here's hoping that they'll do the original game justice.

He loves Wii so much he convinced Eidos to translate Necro-Nesia for the US and Europe...Oh, wait, perhaps he hates Wii fans then? Smilie
