Nintendo News | Zelda: Phantom Hourglass Details

By Jorge Ba-oh 12.05.2007 33

The latest edition of Famitsu details new information from the upcoming Legend of Zelda game for DS, Phantom Hourglass - soon approaching a much anticipated release in the land of the rising sun.

The game takes place in a large central dungeon that holds an evil curse, limiting the time our hero can spend. As players venture deeper into the temple, they can use found sea-charts to navigate to islands to aquire "Sand of Time" to buy more time (by beating bosses) to spend in the dungeon.

To accompany him, Link ventures around with a fairy known to the Japanese as "Shiera" and Shii-wan

What I loved about WW was that you would sail for a couple of minutes then reach an island that had a puzzle to solve, a treasure chest buried somewhere near it, a platform to climb up and sort out, and perhaps a submarine or a big octo. Almost every island had multiple things to do. Added to that, the figurine quest is amazing, Windfall Island has sidequests aplenty, and the Tingle statue quest was great if you had the GBA (as was the Knuckle sidequest).

Oh and the amount of time spent sailing has really been overstated by some. Sailing was also fun and relaxing.

However, don't get me started on those bloody bokoblins on top of the Islet of Steel. Spending ages angling your cannon just right to blow them up, only to find that there was absolutely no reason for them to be there and no secret to the island at all, was a real annoyance.

Star for you.

Hold up, I changed my mind.

(The figurine sidequest was brilliant, though.)

What? Does nobody else think the figurine thing was long-winded, unrewarding and generally shite?

Less posty, more gamey.

Nope. Just you. The rest of us are either completionists or very sad people.

As for the sailing being 'fun', five minutes' worth maybe, but half an hour...

Yes I did, i never do that kind of stuff in games, i'm saddened to see people actually got some sort of entertainment value from collecting them.

The figurine quest certainly appeals to the completionist in me. I also think it's a really nice way to be able to look over the fantastic characters in the game. But it is very much an aside and I can see why people might have preferred extra content in a different form.

As for the sailing, if you're ever sailing for half an hour you really need to think about changing the direction of the wind, or perhaps using the Ballad of Gales. Either that or enjoy the little extras like stopping to search for treasure, or going through the barrel gates to start a rupee race.

Also, pan the camera lots, it's nice and cinematic.

The Sailing in WW really did let you get scope. You really felt like travelling in the game, you feel like a real sailor when you see a little speck in the distance grow. I think it was handled well, only that the Wind Changing was tedious.

Aha. I think I see the problem. My personal opinion is that any game which forces 30 minutes of travelling over a landscape which is essentially the same in every direction throughout its entire duration has something wrong with it. Any game which thinks that such travelling is fun and gives you annoying fishing to cope with as well (Triforce Shards anyone?) needs a very serious rethink.

Balladeer,

You've just got no sense for the romance of the sea. Smilie
