In a recent interview, Nintendo of America's Perrin Kaplan confirmed that the GameCube was dead, full stop. Now, though, Nintendo UK has turned this around, claiming it to be incorrect. A spokesperson for Nintendo UK today spoke with Eurogamer, stating "I can confirm that globally, Nintendo is still continuing production of GameCube hardware and GameCube software," thus contradicting Kaplan's previous statement. However, considering she has previously been incorrect on a few big issues, this is not too surprising. In the past she has claimed that the Wii would be region free and also talked about Monolith Soft as being Nintendo 2nd Party, when discussing its Wii project 'Disaster: Day of Crisis'.
Nintendo Europe has been releasing new GameCube games lately, showing its continued support of the system, with The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess receiving a full retail release, plus Naruto 2 also being published for the first time in Europe by the company as well. In addition, since the Wii launched, GameCube software sales have seen an upturn due to the backward compatibility of the platform, with favourites being Capcom's Resident Evil 4 and Nintendo's own The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Four Swords Adventure and Super Smash Bros. Melee.
There is still no word on whether Baten Kaitos Origins will hit Europe in 2007, though.
