Nintendo Updates | Mario Kart 64 & Soldier Blade on Euro VC, News Channel Live

By Adam Riley 26.01.2007 12

Following the announcement yesterday of Nintendo having such great success with the Virtual Console and people accessing the Internet via the Wii system, the European arm has confirmed some new updates for Wii owners.

Racing fans are in for an extra special treat today as Mario Kart 64, one of the greatest games in the hugely popular Mario Kart series, is available to download to Wii's Virtual Console. Featuring tense racing action for up to four players, Mario Kart 64 is the ultimate trip down nostalgia lane for you and your friends for the small sum of 1000 Wii Points.

As if this great game wasn't reason enough to join the 1.4 million Wii users connected to the internet around the globe, Friday will see the launch of the first version of the News Channel, for free, across Europe. Once downloaded the News Channel provides instant on demand news from around the world at the press of a button. Any readers that have yet to download, can check out some initial images of the service, courtesy of Gizmodo, here.

This Friday will also see the release of Soldier Blade from Turbografx (PC Engine), which will join over 40 classic titles already available for the Virtual Console. Since launch 1.5 million games have been downloaded worldwide from the service.

Didn't think this was going live until the 27th, does this mean we got it ealier than everyone else, or has everyone gone live ? All good though...

'is it ten 2 two already'

Yeah, I'm not exactly sure, could anyone outside the UK verify this?

Such a cool little feature, though - the stacked papers on top of countries is great!

Can't wait to get home and try it out.

I hope you don't mind me asking a few questions

1. Does it do all types of news like technology, sport etc?

2. Does it do the news in your area?

3. Do you know how often it updates?

cheersSmilie

1) Yep.
2) Not exactly, I mean we get London as the center of UK updates.
3) Every hour I think.

Downloading it now, it's taking ages........

Well it seems to be working in Ireland, i hope wwe don't get hit with London updates instead of Dublin updates.

Awesome stuff, looks pretty nice, I wish it had the capability of adding XML feeds, so you can get your own sources in the channel.

Wow that update totally confused my Wii. Everything started crashing, the Wii-motes wouldn't work...all very odd. Left it alone for an hour or so and now it is working. Downloaded Mario Kart 64 too, awesome Smilie

Trying to think of a witty signature after 'Hacker-gate'...

Downloaded Mario Kart 64, which I never actually owned, so very cool. Smilie

The News Channel is interesting but a bit messy. I'd rather choose my own main topics to be on instant display.
