Nintendo Interview | Hideo Kojima on DS & Wii Support

By Adam Riley 16.10.2006 14

When Hideo Kojima, the brains behind Metal Gear Solid, speaks, the world listens. And now he has spoken openly with Famitsu about his DS support and future Wii title(s). Below are some translated quotes, courtesy of Games Are Fun:

Famitsu: Next I'd like to touch upon Kabutore [stock trading game for DS]. This game is really breaking the boundaries for you, isn't it?

Kojima: Yes, it is. I really want to surprise people with this game. I want to deliver a new feeling to the player, so I'm pushing myself hard in order to [do that]. That said, I also have MGS4 to work on and only wish I could save myself more time and energy to work on other projects.

Famitsu: With games like Boktai and Kabutore it really seems like you're trying to stay on the cutting edge.

Kojima: Really it's just because I like to make games like these.

And when quizzed on his preference of next generation systems, he showed how he would definitely like to support them all, Wii included:

Famitsu: I would also like to ask you about the next generation of video game hardware. What do you think of it all?

Kojima: They all have their certain charms, and I would like them all to succeed. Not only the next generation systems but portable gaming and cell phone games are also reaching new heights. With time I'd like to try doing more new things and really challenge myself. I'm hearing much about each new game system. Each company has entrusted their futures with their respective new hardware, so we're carefully looking at each one and seeing what kind of expressions we can create with them. At this point in time I'm not thinking about which system will likely succeed. Like I said, I want all of them to succeed.

Famitsu: Are you saying there's a chance that you'll be making games for each new game system?

Kojima: Of course. As for now, though, MGS4 is a big enough project and it's at the center of my attention.

I don't know why, but it feels kinda sour to hear that "MGS4 is a big enough project" yet he is still able to be doing two DS titles, like, on the side. Mebbe he's not really bothered about the DS titles, or mebbe we'll see some MG references in the stock game...

Solid snake buys $25 worth of stock in the company KanomiKorp...

The sad thing is, Metal Gear Solid (at least in the UK) sells like shit compared to the amount of hype it gets.

Was it MGS3 that only got to number 8 in the all format chart?

He just sounds like he's trying to make his game the best. His ambition is to make good games and since people expect muxh from MGS he'll surely make that his priority. And also the fact that DS projects can be done within a short while makes him able to do them on the side.

Silence is the loudest noise we could possibly hear.

First he doesn't want to reveal this or that platform to be 'the One' for him.
Second he gives me the point: Why not let every one be successful? What's wrong with having every one of the three and some handhelds more being there the next couple of years?
I certainly do not have the money to buy all 3 consoles and hate Microsoft, but others do not and like no Wii.
I even heard one or two people hating Sony... So on the one hand it's hard not to buy some games becausee they are out on the other platform (I am Cube-only, I know how to whine about that!), but it's good for business. No boring one-console-only.

If he releases pearls like Boktai, then he can go with MGS4 on PS3 - I am too stupid to play it anyway - I own Twin Snakes...

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

i reckon he should abandon MGS... its all so samey and it's obvious he's feeling the burden of it. how does TTS differ all that much from MGS2 Sons of Whatever? why is this guy so critically acclaimed, Boktai? And what has he done for Nintendo fans? an unproven Stock game for DS? come off it. eeeeeveryones developing for DS! He's more interested in his ps3 MGS4.

Kojima is a legend!

He may be more interested in MGS4 - or so it seems. He is tired of MGS and said so. He was so keen about SSB brawl and to have Snake in it, that he sounded like a crazy kid.
MGS is woderfully designed and has a lot of great moments. But maybe every MGS is just the same.

so what? Zelda is too! And I love it.
I do not like MGS that much, but I think Kojima-san is a bit cought in his contracts. building up his own company, making Boktai and Co are other signs.
He has no need for developing on DS, but this may be the only platform he has a bit time left, as it is not as consuming as for other platforms.
I hope he can do whatever he wants after MGS4. I see him a bit like Snake in the trailers: He is worn out from MGS4, turning old and grey in his entrails - literally spoken.

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

I would buy it if;

1. You could actually find it.
2. If it was on a console other than the Playstation (Yes I know about MGS2, but that's supposed to be crap, and Twin Snakes is still too damn expensive!)

Tin Can Man, wha don't you have a look at amazon.co.uk? I bought my Twin Snakes at Amazon.de in the marketplace-area for 25 EUR, that's not soo expensive, I think...
And it's looking fine, not too old, graphics okay...

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Personally I can't see why people even like MGS. I suppose I'm not really in any position to judge because I still haven't played the newest ones, but the first MGS bored the shit out of me... Splinter Cell is at least 10 million times better

Personally don't see the fuss about MGS and Kojima.

Mike Gee of iZINE said, "...The Verve, as he [Richard Ashcroft] promised, had become the greatest band in the world. Most of the critics agreed with him. Most paid due homage. The Verve were no longer the question mark or the clich. They were the statement and the definition."

The MGS series is(easily) up there in the top 5 game series ever made. You naysayers should seriously sit down and play the games as they really are brilliant.

I don't believe that Boktai holds a candle to the MGS games. No way. It's claim to fame is the gimmick that came with it.

I can understand how he feels about MGS4. The game would be so draining to produce, such hype surrouding it. Must be a tough task. They have actually finished the cor gameplay elements of the game and are working on content now.

I'm sure that things will work out nicely, especially with capping the storyline off as he's probably already had these things preset in his mind or he can pull out a new twist with the PSP version as the stories interlink.

It's good to see him keep an open mind, but I feel as tho he'll bias towards to PS3 as Konami as a publisher and himself have already stated that they like the PS3 as it turns gaming in to a cinema. And thats Hid's.

I agree about trying to find the MGS games, man they are so hard to find. Real pity.Smilie

Assuming that Kojima isn't completely ready to wash his hands of the Metal Gear series, I'd like to see some remakes of the original Metal Gear games that came out on the NES made for the DS.

Played TWin Snakes... Bored the shit out of me, but like I said I won't judge completely until I've played 2 and/or 3
