Nintendo Media | Sonic Genesis Screens (GBA)

By Jorge Ba-oh 05.09.2006 36

Sega previously announced that they're bringing their iconic mascot in his original guise to the GBA in Sonic The Hedgehog Genesis as part of the hedgehog's 15th birthday celebrations. Read on to see how the blue wonder is shaping up on Nintendo's handheld.

In 1991 Sega gave birth to a cool, sophisticated, naked blue hedgehog to save the world from the disturbed evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Eggman) on the Mega Drive (Genesis) and the success of the franchise leading to three much loved sequels on the platform before his transformation to CDs.

His side scrolling platform antics can be experienced on the move with a very good looking port on the GameBoy Advance, complete with added spin dash and save (not found in the original) for some very different experiences.

Whether the team will bring the other titles to Nintendo portables is currently unknown. Please Sega, please.

Thanks to Jeux-France for the screens.

Stick with C3 for future media updates.

I really, really, really hope they bring the original series to the DS. Please do!

SK&3 would be so awesome on the move, and would save having to buy a Sega Nomad. Maybe a good MD emulator is out there for the DS, who knows!

Surely they could bundle a couple of those together, though?

I'm not really sure on Cart-Size for either the MD or DS specificaly but I'm pretty sure Sonic 1 would fit on a DS cart a good few times?

Ah well, gotta make some money somehow - wouldn't say no to a review copy of this either. Smilie

i might pick it up, if its cheap, i refuse to pay full price for a game thats been re-released many times.

I'm freakishly addicted to Sonic that I would pay for this Smilie I'd definitely pay full price for a complete DS cart of Sonic 1,2,3&K - Amazing!

I'm good with Sonic RushSmilie

I did buy me a Megadrive with Sonic 1 on eBay for approx. 10 EUR.
Really, Sega. I love you for bringing all the old Sonics to various Consoles (still struggling to buy Sonic Gems for GCN), but as Nintendo is doing with Mario:

Please make a new 2D-sidescroller-Sonic for DS!!!

why always doing the old ones? Do a new one, man! It's the only way Sonic is fun: 2D Sidescroller!
I never played the 3D-Sonics. Is it worth it?

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Sonic CD for DS would be cool (or not) but a new DS 3Dish(i mean like new super mario Bros. 2D/3D character and stage design) Sonic will be cool.

Silence is the loudest noise we could possibly hear.

I never played the 3D-Sonics. Is it worth it?

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEL NO!

The sucky controls and camera will have you frustrated in no-time! Mostly the camera though. If it was just the controls it would've actually been fun, but that camera...Smilie

I might have bought it if it was Sonics one, two and three bundled together on one cart. But selling it on it own is taking the pee. It's a fifteen year old game for goodness sake.

Yep that was rereleased on MegaCollection for the GC,PS2 and Xbox! and you can get

I was expecting a bit more of an overhaul with the graphics, & it looks like the screen is kinda small (& Sonic's kinda big)

BUT OMFG SPINDASH!!! Smilie

I'm still getting this regardless of whether it's the exact same game or not.

Just noticed this, but I think it's funny that you wrote "please SEGA please" in there! Smilie

But didn't you know? SEGA & Nintendo fell out!

I dunno how, but SEGA is "blancing" Nintendo nowadays! I mean... only 7 Wii titles? Smilie

EDIT: HEY!? WHY THE HELL ARE YOU GUYS FLAMING IT!? Smilie

Now, just so you know. The game is only gonna cost $19.99... so how much's that in

Picodrive DS, works fairly well allthough framerate is currently half what it should be, and there isnt sound.
Still in development though.

Wait... It's only the first one? That's shit... I'll just stick to Sonic Jam. That has the spindash and save feature too...

Sought, don't forget the fact that Sonic Heroes was shit... The first 2 Sonic Adventures are great though. DON'T LISTEN TO ANYONE ELSE!!

I like Sonic Hereos Smilie

& it got varied reviews, some thought it was great & some thought it sucked, so there I'm ALLOWED to like it Smilie

A rip off this title may be but I must admit I do LOVE seeing classic Sonic floating around the front page.

I so have to reserve the review of this! *Runs to staff forum before JB knows what has hit him*

I wouldn't call It a rip off as It's only $19.99 and the Classic NES collection were more expensive weren't they?

Well yes, and they were MORE of a rip off. Smilie

Cubed3 Staff [ Retro Editor :: Previews Editor ]

They should have been cheaper than they were... At least under

Exactly!

And as brill as portable classic Sonic is, it isn't really worth the money after the release of Mega and Gems Collection on the Cube (which are now cheap as anything anyway!)

Cubed3 Staff [ Retro Editor :: Previews Editor ]

Meh, I'll be getting it anyway Smilie

I'm (kinda) looking forward to this although I can never seem to get into any GBA games after getting my shiny DSL. It just feels like I might as well buy some pre-2002 GC games just because they are good.

Oh, and it would be really good to do wireless co-op with Sonic and Tails or S&K. I would say "OMFG LETz DOOZ DIS OnLinE WIV TEH VOX Chatz0rz n stuf!!!11!!", but a local wireless co-op would be pretty fun too.

Yeah, a good coop multiplayer would be a great idea!! Smilie

But I still love GBA, because I still have 2 more Final Fantasy games to look forward to on it! Smilie

I still play my GBA more than my GC, but I do plan to play all of my consoles again soon, since I have something to do on ALL of them ('cept my SMD!!) Smilie

Sonic is crap. Unlike Mario, all you do in Sonic is run and jumpSmilieSmilie

Idea of Sonic 3& Knuckles WiFi = Brilliant
Spindash = Great
Save = Good
Sonic Heroes = OK

This looks alright and would be one to buy if it wasn't over a decade old or if hadn't been re-released several times already.
