Nintendo Speculation | DS + Motion Sensor = Wii Controller?

By Adam Riley 07.08.2006 23

According to Nintendo Gossip, Nintendo is set to release a gyro-sensor cartridge for the Nintendo DS, with it slotting into the GBA port on the system. They have been anonymously told that this device will allow the DS to be used as a controller for some Wii game.

According to the source, the new set-up will be unveiled at the Games Convention in Leipzig at the end of the month and will be highlighted in Tony Hawks Downhill Jam, which is coming on both DS and Wii.

Well, we'll know if it's true or not by the end of the monthSmilie

Hmm, that's really interesting - like some sorta Tilt and Tumble type game?

It would surely suck the battery dry and to think they could stuff all that technology into a GBA cartridge is surely Naive? I also think the DS is not built to send that much data out.
Perhaps a modified version of the GBA one with a few new games? Smilie

Or have I got it all wrong and that is what they mean? Smilie

Sure they can stuff all the technology into a GBA-cartridge.

But maybe Sony could tweak a GBA-slot into their Controller and then every Sony-customer could get such a gyro-sensor for getting more real tilting-motion-detection...

*buahahahahahahahaha buuuuuahahahahaha*

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

They did it with kirbys tilt and tumble, it really isn't that advanced, it's just a tilt sensor after all.

It's interesting but I don't think I could be convinced unless I saw some footage of a game making good use of it. The GCN

The controller is also stuffed full of advanced accelerometers aswell..hmm Smilie

The reason why the Gamecube to Gameboy connectivity failed to garner interest was due to the fact those machines were both Stand Alone Complexes, and needed that tacky connectivity link to join them up. However both the DS and the Wii are both wifi enabled thus compatibilty between the two will be easier and more seamless and if rumours are to be believed that the PSP can double up as a PS3 controller via Wfi, it seems very doable for DS and Wii to be able to somehow pullit off as well.

Yeah, a tilt sensor only has to be about 5mm big. They cost about 4.2 cents per unit and take up such a negligible amount of battery power that you wouldn't notice it.

Sounds like a good guess from that site.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Yeah the controller is but the GBA cart would probably only have the tilt function.

Hopefully the tilt sensor cartridge will work with the rumble pak cartridge.

How would that work?

A tilt sensor is a good bet, but I doubt the DS being used as a controller. Its only going to lead to confusion- having 4 different types of controller, each with addons, is not a good plan. (Meaning the remote, the GC pad, the retro pad, and potentially, the DS.)

Exactly, it would take away from the simplicity factor which is very valuable for Nintendo.

Unfortunately, only a small hand full of games utilizing the GCN-GBA connectivity were realized with Nintendo's vision of the concept. Titles like LotZ: Four Swords Adventure, LotZ: Wind Waker, FF: Crystal Chronicles, and the Splinter Cell trilogy for example (although Ubisoft screwed us by not including at least splitscreen multi-player modes let alone LAN) were amazing, IMO.

The problem was how expensive it got to fully take advantage of it. It wasn't convenient or affordable. A lot of people passed it off as a stupid gimmick, but what's funny (or disturbing) is that the majority of people I've spoken to who feel that way haven't even tried it. I totally recommend it if you have the extra money to spend. It really is a hoot, lol.

Now with the type of wireless technology for Wii and DS, it will be far more user friendly, convenient and affordable. I personally think Nintendo is on to something big, but the limitation of technology this past generation hindered it greatly. That and the lack of intelligent utilization of the concept by most devs. Only time will tell if the connectivity concept will take off now that the technology available has streamlined the experience.

Chance favors the prepared mind.

The DS IS being used as a controller for some games, though not necessarily a tilt one, and not necessarily the default. It's an option for Pok

Do the GameCube and the retro controller both serve the same function?

Oh noes!! The DS is turning into the Wii! Peripherals peripherals...Thank the lord I have quite good organisational skills...

I seriously hope not. I don't think it's true though.

Did we ever actually get Kirby's tilt and tumble in Europe... I want it ;_;

Speaking of controllers (somewhat), what if the retro controller could plug in GBA, GB, and GBC games to play on the tv screen? Without some other device, just the controller itself with a hole in it for those games to be jacked in.

Smilie That would be so cool !

Probably wouldn't happen though, I guess Smilie
