Nintendo Sales | Tamagotchi & Mario Basket Strong in Japan

By Adam Riley 03.08.2006 20

Below are the latest sales from Japan, courtesy of data tracker Media Create. Tamagotchi's sequel starts off amazingly strong, looking like it could easily catch the sales of its million-selling predecessor. Its sales, however, have not stunted Super Mario's, with the DS platform romp storming past the 2.5 million mark after just TEN weeks on sale!

The Square Enix-developed Mario Basket starts off with a surprisingly strong ~110,000 units, despite the sport not being very popular in Japan. Clearly the mix of Nintendo and Final Fantasy characters was too appealing to pass up. The question now is will it drop heavily, though. Nintendo's cooking helper holds up well in its second week considering all the competition around it, crossing the 60,000 mark and bringing its total to nearly 190,000 already.

Sega will not be quite as pleased, though, since its Mushiking only manages a No.10 entry with sales of nearly 32,000 units, placing it behind both Brain Training games. The company will have to hope that it now proves to be a slow burner. Included as well as the 11-30 sales positions, courtesy of NeoGAF.com, with sales where available and even some sales totals. The main highlight ('lowlight' maybe) is that Animal Crossing has finally dropped out of the Top 10.

Sweet... Bring on the basketball~!

Good sales for Tamagotchi, a bit disappointing for Mario Basketball and I'd say disastrous for Mushiking 2, especially seeing how well the last GBA version did (roughly in the same period one year ago, if I remember well).

Mario 3 on 3 looks pretty fun and people say it's the best looking DS game.

...Until FFIII comes out, that is! Smilie

the japanese love tamigotchi though so it will not matter how crap it is it will sell like wild fire will definitely hit a million in the land of the rising sun.

yea thats true I guess.. but it looks like it has a different name... the one that was released here was 'Corner Shop' but I'm not sure what it was in Japan...

170,000 more people have DS lites, if people keep buying DS's over there, the island will sink. Smilie

Oh another week of the DS dominatin the charts what a surprise. It just blows my mind how popular it is.

Aw, Project Hacker is not selling well. There is no chance that this game will be released in the west.

Animal Crossing has sold three million units. I never expected this.

For a second there i thought the GBA sold -9 units.

project hacker does have me worried. with small sales it may never see the light of day in the west unless rising star games picks it up. the slow down of animal crossing is to be expected as most people have it now so its really only the new people buying it. i would say that 3 million is sort of the slow down mark for most big ds games in japan.

Whey, Animal Crossing has passed the 3 million mark! (but is out the top ten Smilie)

Still, kick-ass DS sales all round, as usual Smilie

Project Hacker's sales are better than the PSP saviour Loco Roco

Anyways the XBX has seen an increase in sales 1100% kudos to MS

Electroplankton came across with lower sales, so there's hope for Project Hacker...

Starfox has apparently gone down the same route as Metroid Hunters...so probably will end up at 40k for the week. Rhythm Tengoku is also set to reach about 30k at the end of the week, with the big winner being SD Gundam on PSP, heading up to around 150,000 by the time the next chart is published!

Unconfirmed numbers:

G-Generation Portable - 120k on the higher end (86% of shipment)
Fist of the North Star Pachislot SE - 60k (21% of shipment)
Tokimeki Memorial GS2 - 25k (53% of shipment)
Starfox Command - 20k (25% of shipment)
Growlanser V Regular - 17k (48% of shipment)
Growlanser V Limited - 15k (53% of shipment)
Goku Makaimura - 15k (61% of shipment)
Rythem Tengoku - 13k (60% of shipment)

some unconfirmed first day sales and it looks like Rythem Tengoku will sell through his 20k shipment but it looks like Nintendo knew it wasn't going to sell that well maybe because they think the GBA is all but dead and you can't help but think that jesusraz had a point about maybe putting wario or wario ware in front of it.

Coming to starfox it looks to have dissapointed altough it sold a quater of it's shipment but it looks japan have had a enough of the series
