Industry News | Sega: Third Parties Should Take Wii More Seriously

By Jorge Ba-oh 21.07.2006 21

With the Wii revolution beginning to grow as the console reaches its final stages before worldwide release, analysts have been in two minds with their thoughts on how the console would perform in the market.

Various developers immediately jumped onto to Wii ship, spotting a potential winner that could certainly mirror the success of the DS's original control schemes.

Speaking to Nex-Gen.biz, Sega's vice president of marketing Scott Steinberg has questioned other third-parties, urging them to work harder to get onboard the Wii boat of dreams. He told the site, "The pundits are missing the point when it comes to the Wii's strategy - not every third party is late to the launch. Some third parties have shown a lack of imagination when dealing with this new platform. The way the Wii is being built you have to design for it. Ports and upgrades are no good. That thinking takes a little bit of creativity and not every publisher has the necessary creative people available."

He confirmed that Sega is fully on-board, noting two exclusives

Odd thing for sega to say, but good nonetheless. Sega and ubisoft seem dedicated to his machine.

Yeah... that's why their plans include nearly 30 games for PSP and just half for the DS... come on Sega, try to sound a bit more coherent!

But Mr. Steinberg is right here. I absolutely agree with him, that you have to put a bit thinking into the console as it was, basically, with every Nintendo-console in the past and even present (GCN and DS).
Ports are possible, but they have to be changed onto the Wiimote to work fully on Wii. And beside that, every change in controlling a game makes it a new experience...

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Nintendo are risking a lot with the Wii, in my opinion, as the Wii could either bring in lots of exclusives from interested developers, or the unique control system could alienate developers afraid the Wii will be too niche. Hopefully not.

Sega's monkey ball 2 was the best.(In my opinion) And Sonic used to better...
Hope the two new games are Going to be better than some of the more recent games

No-one can keep up with Sega, all we need now is some 'totaly awesome' secret Sega games to be announced. I'm looking at you, NiGHTS 2.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

I prefer the original Monkey Ball Smilie

I think that the Wii will be a success, although the extent of its sales does depend on third party support, which at the moment isn't bad but pretty average. If the Wii starts to sell well then we might see more developers making games for it as well as other platforms.

OMFG! Press release!

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

i would definitely love to see nights into dreams hit the wii along with panzer dragoon. space harrier and super hang on.
i can see these games working really well on the wii so lets hope sega and nintendo get on with it.

orta was good on the xbox but it just didn't feel right. i really only bought the xbox for a few sega exclusives.

They say that, but they still only have 2 games for Wii as far as I can remember. Nights 2 would be sexy though, as long as Naka's still at the helm...

I dunno, Naka's gone a bit sour I think. What was the last decent thing he did?

I'd be happy with Smilebit doing it, they'd do a kick ass job.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Hmm... That is a good point. Jet Set Radio is definately one of my favourites on the DC, but it would just feel wrong for anyone but Naka to do it ;_; I know he wouldn't make another one unless he could make it better than the first

As long as all the buttons do the same thing, it'll feel like a good old Naka game.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

And I love those two companies so that's good. Hopefully we also see a Splinter Cell coming along? Ubisoft does the most amazing things with Splinter Cell.

What you mean no one can keep up with SEGA?

Although i agree with what Mr.S said he is being a bit contradictory when they are massivley supporting the PSP over the DS and have 2 games planned for the Wii. Persoanlly i think Ubisoft have reallly used the Wii to the full extent so far and i am can't wait for Red Steel.

Activison and EA also seems to be very much on board wish that can be said for Namco Capcom and Konami

its funny Sega saying this... their only making 2 games for the Wii....
but anyway if SEGA are saying this then its better then hearing it from EA!!!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

Don't forget there giving a tonn of support to the virtual console aswell guys.

Support shouldn't be mentioned in quantity alone, quality is a main factor.

Just because SEGA have only announced two Wii games doesn't make them contradictory. The two games being made for the Wii are tailor made for that console. Think of that from a business perspective, you are dedicating staff and resources to making games that you can't sell on any other platform for a console that is a huge risk and who's predocessor under-performed at market. Yes the DS has fewer games than the PSP but how many of those PSP games are generic or toned down version of exisitng games? How many are PSP tailored compared to the number of DS tailored games?

Even EA to a degree are supporting the Wii, they've stated that exclusive games for any console won't really factor into their gameplan, what we will see are games with exclusive content dependant on the console its released on.

I'm pretty sure SEGA have more than two Wii games going, actually. Somebody from them said in an interview that there was a game or two in development that they've not announced yet (not sure where I read said interview, I read far too much on a daily basis to keep track of it all, and this was weeks ago), and they also have interest in creating a tennis game (though not of the Virtua Tennis franchise). They're keeping their cards close to their chest, and I expect they've got something along the lines of NiGHTs 2 or Samba De Amigo Wii in progress. Or something entirely new, perhaps to do with Project Rub in some way...

I agree that third parties should be taking Wii more seriously, definitely. I think developers are waking up to this as well - look at guys like Gearbox, now getting behind the console, and various developers who have slunk out with support for it. They all saw it as a joke console that wouldn't catch on, then were blown away by the superb response at E3 and basically have nothing there ready for it, and so are now scrambling to get on the boat before it goes sailing off. It's obvious who is taking it seriously out of the big third parties: SEGA, Ubisoft, Activision, EA, THQ. Most others are either smaller developers with a title a piece or they're floundering and wondering why the hell they've ignored it so long.
