Industry News | Acclaim Rises from the Dead

By Adam Riley 10.07.2006 19

For those wondering what had happened to the many familiar names that Acclaim held the rights to, now they have been snapped up from the bankrupt company and are set to make a comeback in the near future thanks to Throwback Entertainment.

Acclaim went bust back in 2004 after filing for bankruptcy, but was able to off-load certain franchises, such as the Turok brand, which is currently being revived on PS3 and XBOX 360. Now, though, many of its other brands have been picked up by Throwback. Below is a list of games that company now owns the rights and interests to the likes of:

  • Extreme-G Racing 1-3
  • Fur Fighters
  • Gladiator: Sword of Vengeance
  • Legends of Wrestling
  • Re-Volt
  • Spawn
  • Summer Heat Volleyball
  • Aggresive Inline
  • Tunnel B1
  • Vexx
  • Wetrix
  • XGRA
  • Plus there are many more games, all of which can be viewed: here. There are currently no firm plans in place that the public have been made aware of, but Throwback's CEO Thomas Maduri had this to say on the matter:

"Acclaim Entertainment was responsible for the creation of some wonderful original games, and unfortunately couldn't see them through their lifecycle. We are very pleased to have been afforded the opportunity to take these titles through the next generation, and onwards. Many of the titles have all the elements required to establish franchises. With new services broadening the reach of games, Throwback will be well positioned for the expansion of the franchises."

Hopefully Nintendo fans will not miss out on some of these great games, especially the Extreme G series. Unfortunately the excellent Forsaken from the N64 is absent from the list, making you wonder where it has disappeared to...

Yeah that would be awesome and could work really well on the DS, I remember having Wetrix on my N64 I really enjoyed it, and loved it when I made a kind of pond/crater and ducks came and lived on it. I really regret trading it in. But yeah I wonder were Forsaken is im suprised to see they didn't snatch that up.

I'll be surprised if Turok doesn't make it to Wii or DS, it's been on N64 & GC as big titles...

Extreme G racing would be absolutely awesome on Wii, I can tell, I remember loving the N64 game.

    That's a joke, right?

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

I've got wetrix on the PS2, its a good games with some flaws, mainly the camera angle and its affect on the controls but considering it was out at the very beginning of the PS2's life cycle it can be forgiven.

I didn't know they made a PS2 version, had it down as just an old forgotten N64 puzzler.

Acclaim = rubbish maybe except for Xtreme G but will always play second fiddle to Fzero

Mike Gee of iZINE said, "...The Verve, as he [Richard Ashcroft] promised, had become the greatest band in the world. Most of the critics agreed with him. Most paid due homage. The Verve were no longer the question mark or the clich. They were the statement and the definition."

I loved Fur Fighters ;_; I have no idea why... The controls were shite but it was fun...

FF was a decent little game on the DC. A real laugh with mates.

See, I'm not insane... Plus it'd be easy to sort out the controls with the Wiimote, and add in some kind of crazy Wii-central functionality I'm sure

I have EG Racing 3 on GC and i like it!!! Smilie it s a preety good game!! Although TUROK was horrible!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

I've never played or gotten into Turok, but when people look in the PS magazine & see the game they're like "FUCKING HELL TUROK!!!! YESSSS!!!"

Re-Volt was a decent racer. Extreme-G and XGIII were good, but 2 and XGRA were poor.

What needs to be remembered is that Acclaim merely published games like Wetrix, so I'm not sure what would happen with future editions (Zed Two developed it, but no longer exist after being absorbed by Warthog and then shut down).

I know a batch of games, like Iggy's Reckin' Balls, are going down the XBLA route, so maybe some will turn up on the VC as well.
