Nintendo News | Amazing Super Mario Bros. First Day Sales in Japan

By Adam Riley 27.05.2006 25

Whilst first day sales are now somewhat something of the past, NEW Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS appears to be a welcomed exception. According to a Japanese blog, the game has already sold a massive 480,000 units from just ONE DAY on sale (released on 25th May in Japan). This automatically places it above the previous fastest selling DS title, Brain Training 2, which sold 414,556 over its first four days on sale.

Now, considering retailers originally asked Nintendo for between 1.2 and 1.3 million units of the game, and the fact that Nintendo has officially shipped 800,000 units for the whole first week, it looks like NEW Super Mario Bros. will become the fastest million seller on the DS, dispelling all thoughts of the non-game craze taking sales away from true gaming titles. But until next Wednesday / Thursday, when Media Create releases its official sales information, we will not know the extent of the game's sales. Although starting at 480,000 on day one, it could easily tap out at 650,000 for the whole week.

For comparitive purposes, here are the first week sales of some other Mario titles, just so you can all see the difference (thanks to cvxfreak of NeoGAF):

  • Super Mario Advance - 219,551
  • Super Mario Advance 2 - 113,183
  • Super Mario Advance 3 - 95,596
  • Super Mario Advance 4 - 105,813
  • Super Mario 64 DS - 120,062
  • Super Mario 64 - 162,111
  • Super Mario Sunshine - 280,610
  • Famicom Mini 01: Super Mario Brothers - Roughly 65,100
  • Famicom Mini 01: Super Mario Brothers (20th Anniversary Reprint) - 187,386
  • Famicom Mini 21: Super Mario Brothers 2 - 99,126
  • Super Mario World - 223,750
  • Stick with C3 for further updates...

holy shit! Could this become the fastest selling game of all time?

On the DS, yes, but you have to remember that Dragon Quest VII and VIII sold in the multi-millions in their first week on the PS and PS2, plus the Pok

hmmm alright...you're on a lil early arent you raz?

I wonder what Phantom Hourglass sales will be like...

Despite people arguing here that new game-ideas have to be found and that Ninty is releasing title after title based on one game (Mario, or Zelda) that's what I want: An oldschool 2D platform-game with my most hated Mario (Yes, I do not like this guy, but he's in the best games ever).
I was somewhat irritated with Super Mario 64 being one dimension too much for me, but with 2D everything is fine.
I hope they sell 400 K each day in the first week!

edit: Oh, and thanks for the comparatives!

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Stock peaks at 800,000 for week one according to Nintendo Japan, so factoring in those that have pre-ordered and not picked it up in the first week (for whatever reason), I'd say a maximum of 650,000-700,000 in total. Who knows, though? Smilie

Stalker, it's half ten on Saturday morning, and I didn't get drunk on Friday night like I normally do...so good morning! Hehe Smilie

As for Zelda: PH, I'm not sure...Wind Waker didn't too spectacular on the GC. It started on 362,750 for Week One (back at the in Dec '02) and finally tapped out at around 882,750 a year later. BUT, the DS userbase is MILES higher than the GameCube's was at the time, so anything could happen! My eyes are firmly locked on July's launch of Final Fantasy III, though...(second Third Party million seller? Methinks YES!)

Christ was Wind Waker really 3 and a half years ago...

It seems Nintendo can really do no wrong in the Fatherland. Let's be having some of that success over here!

    Less posty, more gamey.

Wow, massive seller, great news. Smilie

The first proper 2D Mario for 13 or so years!

    Currently on World 3 Smilie

Its a great game, you really realize how much you missed a new 2d Mario once you start playing it.

Those are seriously frightening sales figues. I wonder what % of the Japanese gaming market Ninty now owns?

He he... Mario Sunshine is the next-fastest seller... And people said it sucked Smilie

I got my copy this morning and have just started playing. It's great, but really seems much simpler than I remember 2D Mario games being...I'm hoping it picks up in terms of difficulty as it goes on.

The designers probably wanted to create a game that anyone can finish...including non-gamers.Smilie

I would think that Zelda TP will sell like this, especially for a worldwide launch but are people still going to have their TP$avings after buying the Wii? Wii will see.

It's alright, I'm getting the feeling it's not as simple as I first thought. And finding all three special coins on each level seems to extend things much more as well. Eight worlds as far as the map says, but there are lots of extra routes to take on each world map...looking great so far! I'll get a review done ASAP next week Smilie

If that is true!?!?! Then WOW... lol those are some huge sales!!!

    And SMS 2nd place!!! Smilie

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

What's wrong with SMS being second? It's a quality game.

Considering when Super Mario Sunshine came out in the lifespan of the GC and the fact that there'd been NO true Mario games on that system when it launched, the first week figures COULD be seen as slightly disappointing. You have to remember that the likes of SMW, SMA, SM64 and SM64DS were all launch titles, so were initially restricted by first week sales of their respective systems as well.

YOU'LL GO TO HELL FOR WHAT YOUR DIRTY MIND IS THINKING

mario bros is gonna be one of those must own games for DS. It just looks so good.
