Nintendo Wii Rumour | Wiimote VoiP Phone?

By John Boyle 25.05.2006 34

wii.qj.net are reporting (as a rumour) that the presence of a speaker on the Wii mote will soon become even more crucial than we thought. The rumour is that a microphone will also be on the mote and the remote will then double up as a VoiP phone so you could call people through your Wii. This has a certain amount of credence. The size and shape of the Wiimote transfers well to a phone, also the "WiiConnect 24" would also mean we could receive calls anytime. And depending on the strength of the mic you could also use it for games. They go onto say how the "grapevine" says that it'll also be used for video calls... which would mean we're still to see a Wii camera, something that was rumoured waayyy back when the console was unveiled but was never picked up on.

So the wait for more info goes on, stick with C3 as and when we get confirmation on the final Wii secret!

Ooooh, I like this idea!

Sounds like an awesome idea, and would really give yet another incentive to buying the Wii console. People may not be ready for a new multimedia format (blu/hd-dvd) but having a new, less expensive, way to chat to others could be a good option...

...but I see nintendo moderating it quite a bit with some sorta unique friend-code-protect-kids-type-thing.

Yeah, no doubt.

I think everyone is expecting a mic on the Wii-mote!!
But VoiP ooo that would be so cooool!!!!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

If this was true (and I've been hearing this rumour as well recently, and I believe it's got some truth to it for sure), then now we know another reason for friend codes and the rumoured memory inside the controller - phone numbers and a virtual phone book for each person respectively.

Who knows, maybe we'll be doing the Cubed3 podcast debate over our Wiis...

Oh, please... That sounds rediculous. I do not know why I do not believe this, but I don't.

You know what? The Wiimote will act as a remote-control. With the unique form it is possible to point it to your TV, DVD-player and audio-equipment and adjust even the volume! Smilie

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Oh, please... That sounds rediculous. I do not know why I do not believe this, but I don't.

Is it so rediculous? Xbox live has had it for 4 years.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Wow...what if:

You get a phone call from your mate, and then a couple of button presses and you can play online together...!

See no Wiivil
Hear no Wiivil
Speak no Wiivil

Already done - Xbox Live.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

True but thats an optional add on, having phone capabilities in the controller itself will only make the controller cost more. The controller is already looking like it'll cost more than the actual console, buying additional controllers could be a problem, no need to make it cost any more when you could just release an optional head set. If nintendo were to go through with this then they must be expecting a rather large online penetration.

-Have you any idea what it's like to be a Fembot living in a Manbot's Manputer's world?
-What?

Bloody hell...The wii has more features than Michael Jacksons plastic Surgeon!! (sorry, bad joke) Smilie

But with the Xbox, you can only recieve calls when your playing it...so.(blows childish Raspberries)..to you.. Smilie

Dude yuor totally awesome. And i won't be killing you anytime soon.

Understandable, penetration with the DS has been superb.

This would be a reason in and of itself for someone to own a Wii. It would be so cool to have you own phone line with your console, and since Nintendo's online is free, we could use it without cost--unlike a certain other service.

It would not cost more when VoIP was built into Wii. If they plan to include a microphone into the wiimote anyway, then VoIP would only be software-driven and would not make wiimote more expensive.
They did announce sometime back, that they made a deal with a company, which build chips that are affordable and low on energy-consuming. Why selling the wiimote for 50 EUR? That would be too much. Remember, we're talking about new gamers here who are buying a console at a modest price. Then selling the controllers at a rediculuous price is not helping in getting new customers to buy it.

And besides: I used a headset for Skype and it hurt after some time. A wiimote would be more like a telephone and woulkd not hurt my elven ears. *lol*

I'm guessing that this feature, it true, is something that a 3rd party company is looking into. Remember this was also stated as a rumor for the DS, but the rumor has not been proven true yet. I'm adopting a wait and see attitude. If this idea does come to fruition then it would be fantastic. If it does not then it would not matter. It was only a rumor

PLEASE LET THIS BE TRUE!!!

I'm skeptical of this, but I don't see why it's not possible.
I don't like the idea of holding the wii controller to the side of my head though. That's just silly! Am I the only one thinks that? It's not like holding a telephone, it's a like talking to a tv remote Smilie

Nintendo snags wiikaraoke.com, built-in mic rumor heats up

The latest Wii rumor, which speculates that the Wiimote has a built-in mic, is starting to heat up with news that Nintendo has registered the 'wiikaraoke.com' domain. Currently, the address redirects browsers to the Nintendo homepage, but we have to assume that this will all change, in time. Of course, Nintendo hasn't confirmed a thing, so the domain could end up remaining dead space or used for other purposes, like a contest.

Still, we can't help but point out that the Wiimote makes for a perfect impromptu microphone.

Hey! I was gonna say that the Japanese penchant for the open-mic would be perfect if this turns out to be true! It's also another sneaky way of Nintendo getting the Wiimote into the hands of your granny.

Gran - "I'm just gonna give Doris a call"

Me - "No need to get up and risk dislocating that hip Nan - use my Wiimote!"

Gran - "Wiimote? I can't be doing with those new-fangled thingymajigs..."

Me - "It's easy, just hold it like so..."Smilie

Clever girl Ninty.

Oh and also - "penetration with the DS has been superb." HazukiSan, you dog you!SmilieSmilieSmilieSmilie

Less posty, more gamey.

Dave - I'm not getting a Wii[sic]! They're for grannies ent they?

*Booming etheral voice* - "Wii is for everyone, child. Thou shalt go forth to gran's and sample it's motiony-goodness, and see that it is good. Thy heart and mind shalt be purified of thy prejudice, and rejoice the day when old gran eventually kicks thy bucket, for thou shalt inherit the power and the glory forever and ever..."

well it's inevitable that they include a mic...how do you think they're going to do a Brain Age or Nintendogs on it?

well that'd be pimp:cooldude:

Nice idea, but will ultimately suck due to Nintendo's lol-paedophile-ness.

Will this be like skype then?
