Mario and Luigi features a unique control scheme where players take control of both characters both during the wandering and battle phases. The battle sequences are very much inspired by Paper Mario on the Nintendo 64, with turn-based attacks that can be enhanced by real-time button inputs.

Players take control of both Mario and Luigi as they try to save Princess Peach's stolen voice. When her voice was taken, it was replaced with explosive expletives that's destroying the kingdom. Bowser, who arrived to kidnap the princess, now needs the Mario Bros. help due to the Princess' now destructive voice.

The game features both real-time action as well as turn-based battles where players must have the Mario Bros. work together. Solving puzzles and defeating enemies will require teamwork.
