Nintendo News | Wii Reaches Epic Proportions

By Adam Riley 22.05.2006 11

Following negative comments from Mark Rein about Nintendo's code-named Revolution previously, Epic's Cliff Bleszinski (lead designer of Gears of War) was recently interviewed about the Nintendo Wii and its presence at E3. Check out what he said below:

Joystiq: Did you have a chance to play the Wii while you were at E3?

Cliff Bleszinski: I did not and I wanted to. I've been reserving judgment on it completely until I get hands on time with it and I just want to, just control it. My schedule was so jam-packed that there was no way I'd be able to hang out in line like that and I'm not that well connected with Nintendo to be able to skip through the line like Robin Williams is.

Joystiq: Epic's gotten a lot of flak for comments made about the Revolution for being graphically inferior. After E3, the consensus was that the first person control could be great. Although you haven't had a chance to play it, do you know if Epic's planning anything?

CB: We're currently talking with Nintendo. It's not really my department to pontificate on other people's system and comments that the wonderful Mark Rein will make occasionally to upset the fans. Again, I reserve judgment of the Wii until I get hands on with it. I was very judgmental about the DS until I actually got to play hands-on with it and I love Trauma Center and stuff like that.

You know what, Nintendo is zigging while everyone else is zagging and they'll be just for it. I give them props for doing something different. My advice to anybody developing a first person shooter for the [Wii] is: even though you have a new way to control and make a new FPS you still need a cool, compelling FPS underneath that. [Control] is only one of five things that you need. Give us a Half-Life 2 with those controls and I'll be first in line to buy it.

This certainly sounds very positive and bodes well for Nintendo forging links with Western developers, with previous news confirming talks with Rockstar and even Eidos backing the Wii with an untitled game already.

I love how Wii is generating excitement in everybodySmilie Practically every company, regardless of the console they are working on, appears genuinely intrigued by the console. It's so refreshing after years of stock remarks from quality developers saying 'our game really isn't best suited to the N64/Gamecube's target demographic' when asked why they're not working on Nintendo hardware.

Less posty, more gamey.

What are the other four!?

The only real criticism aimed at the Wii was that it's lack of a HDD will mean MMORPGs aren't possible, which is rubbish now since you can attach ANY storage device via USB...

THE OTHER FOUR ARE GRAPHICS, STORYLINE, SOUND,(CAN'T THINK OF THE FITH RIGHT NOW) :0)

'A FUCKING HUGE ADVERTISING BUDGET' would be my stab at the fifth.

This is not surprising, at E3. Developers, like Epic, were wowed by the Wii controller and how it was used in strip down versions of Metroid Corruption and Red Steel.

Furthermore, what happened to Valve? In an interview with IGN around the time they were working on Halflife 2 for the Xbox their CEO stated that they were bringing halflife 2 to the next generations of Nintendo and Sony consoles.

I would be the last one to burn a half life 2 package. Means: I would consider to buy it.

Now everything is well: Epic send a poor fella (I think he pulled the most short straw) to lick at Ninty's and the fans shoes and everything goes... Smilie

But I would love to see games from one of the 3 mentioned: Valve, Epic and... another one. *g*

it's important to not forget the five big things - and gameplay for the market Ninty is pointing at is the most important - maybe Epic gives us the 1st Third-Person-1st-person-shooter... (okay, that's a really weird word. And okay, Red Steel is very 1st-person. But... well!)
