E3 2006 News | Sonic Wild Fire on Nintendo Wii

Previously rumoured on GameFront, Sega have confirmed that an exclusive Sonic title is in development for Nintendo Wii. The game, Sonic: Wild Fire, is set to be Sonic's first solo adventure since the original game. It will be taking advantage of the Wii controller to create a different new experience.

Classic tale 'Arabian Nights' plays a big part in this latest game, with Sonic going out to try and recover missing pages of the storybook and re-enact the story. This provides the game with a backdrop of mosaic tiles, palm trees, oases and stone columns, with Sonic activating new tricks according to the enviroment as well as jumping, dashing and dodging around obstacles.

"Sonic Wild Fire and the innovative Wii controller changes the way gamers play interactive entertainment," said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of SEGA of America, Inc. "SEGA is excited to lead the gameplay revolution through its support of Wii with a Sonic release built exclusively for this new system."

The Wii controller will be used to steer Sonic about, by holding the controller horizontally with two hands and swerving it side to side to move and maneuver through different paths and around enemies. Tilting forward will cause Sonic to dash-attack enemies and break down barriers. Mini-games are also included that focus on the controller and can be played either alone or in multiplayer.

Sonic Wild Fire has a tentative release date of 2007. We hope to be able to bring you more news on it from the showfloor at E3 soon.

Sounds good to me. I wonder if Sonic will run automatically and only movement will be made with the Wii-mote? It'd be nice to think that maybe the 'a' and 'b' buttons can be used...NES style!

Has anyone downloaded the zip files from the Sega site? Each is a Photoshop file screenshot, looks fairly good, though it isnt obvious what platform they are for:

Having looked at the shots, I'd say they are likely for the Wii, as without being offensive to the console they don't look good enough to be on PS3 or 360: they are noticeably better than GameCube graphics though in my opinion!

Well, the downloads from Sega are for NextGen, and if they are for 360 or PS3 then the graphic quality of those two consoles is not as high as they say! I would think they are actually Wii screenshots, they are better than GC but not as good as 360 or PS3 can do.

Someone post them online somewhere?

They don't have any screenshots linked to from the Wii press release, so I doubt they're for that. Those screens posted above also look like the version shown for PS3 and 360.

I'm guessing their old 360/PS3 screens - the archive date says 2005.

Ah well, I'm suitably unimpressed with the screens if they are 360/PS3 ones: the Wii should have no issues keeping up with that type of quality!

Some games don't work in 3D, and Sonic is one of them. The series will NEVER be as good as it was on the Mega Drive, Sega have to move on and let this franchise die happily.

OK fine, maybe I overreacted, an exclusive Sonic game, great, but I bet there aren't that many 360 or PS3 fans that crave it, at least not as much as I crave the helping of Sonic they get.

Sounds like a spin off, it doesn't sound to me to have anything to do with the current storyline in the Sonic-verse.

EDIT to Ben: Yes, everyone hated Sonic Rush didn't they. People hate Sonic.

The new way of playing could be rubbish, at least with the new Sonic game on PS3/360, I know it will be as good as Sonic Adventure, or better.

Yuji Naka only programmed Sonic, he's been having less & less input into Sonic stuff, so it's not that much of a big deal that he left.

Sonic was going downhill anyway (according to the people you'll meet on this website)
