Metroid 2 Fan Remake Released on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Years in the making, the fan project to remake Metroid 2 has now been completed and is available to play now.

Another Metroid 2 Remake, or AM2R for short, from producer DoctorM64, has aimed to remake the original Game Boy title Metroid 2: Return of Samus using the modern Metroid: Zero Mission gameplay style, complete with new graphics and areas, a map system, log system, stackable beam system, high quality soundtrack, updated enemy AI, and more.

Released on the 30th anniversary of the Metroid series, the fan remake is now available at long last for everyone to download and play for free on Windows PCs, right here.

This version is not the final one, but it is noted to be the first one, so expect updates in the future, along with a Linux build.

With no hints from Nintendo at remaking the second game in the franchise, this looks to be worth any Metroid fan's time and could make completing Metroid 2 a possibility for those that found the original too tough and confusing to navigate.

Update 8-Aug-2016: The download page and file links are now offline.

Lol! I literally came on this news article to post the same thing "Fans doing what Nintendon't" xD

I'm intrigued to get more feedback on this. Az, are you playing with a keyboard or do you have a PC controller?

Using my DualShock 4 (with InputMapper program to emulate a 360 pad).

Really enjoying playing through it, and the log entries are great touches.

1.) Just played a bit and it's fantastic! Has he added extra bits to it? Seems far more advanced than the GB version.

2.) Wow! I've been looking for a decent option for using a controller on my PC. Thanks Smilie

Yeah, new areas have been added. I have come across a couple of minibosses I certainly don't remember, too.

I've found with the graphical overhaul and the log system that it adds a lot to the lore of the game in an unobtrusive way. You actually get a proper feel for the ancient Chozo civilisation the further you get into the depths of the planet. It's proof Metroid 2 really needed this, but it's done in such a way that it doesn't lose its magic.

I've been following the development of this for the past 6 years or so. There have been lots of demoes based on the engine released over the years as development came along. The release this early came as a surprise though, he lead people to think that the release was later this year, hopefully before the end of the year, and then a surprise release for the anniversary took everyone by surprise. I'm downloading this. Will play that with my Hori Game Boy Player GameCube controller.

I don't know whether we should or not, but a review from one of you guys eventually would be amazing. The game will likely get pulled by Nintendo...but...it'd be the same as us reviewing Mother 3's translation, I guess.

I see no harm in reviewing fan games and translations. We should aim to bring attention to and promote such good things for players.

Supposedly one of the reasons Nintendo's ignored it all these years is because the dev isn't making any money out of it, so I expect it'll continue to be okay.

Edit: Hearing that could be a load of bollocks tho, and they do, of course, have the right to take this down whenever they like if they think it can impact their own sales...

Had to do some magic with joy2key to use my controller of choice with it on my PC but it's working like a charm now and with the controller I'm using, it feels like Metroid Zero Mission very much, save perhaps for the gravity which I'm feeling is a bit higher. Like, Samus falls back down quicker than we got used to in most 2D episodes I feel, she's far less floaty. But it controls well on the whole. I'm finding the revised AI of the Alpha Metroids to be far more challenging than the older game.

Cubed3 Limited Staff :: Review and Feature Writer

Yeah, I've had some trouble with some of the Metroids - defo improved AI, dodging missiles and such. Have had to go back to restock on missiles and come back to refight a couple of them. No deaths on normal so far tho...

Looks like that's that, then. Nintendo got involved and the download page and files are offline.

Obviously well within their rights to do this, but an incredible shame they aren't being forward thinking like SEGA, Valve and Yu Suzuki's team (as examples) have been with fan projects and brought the makers on board to either develop their projects for their own hardware or use their talents for other future titles.

SEGA did it with Christian Whitehead and we got Sonic 1, 2 and CD HD out of it, as well as the upcoming Sonic Mania. Valve did it with Half-Life Black Mesa. Suzuki did it with a Shenmue HD fan creator, who is now working on Shenmue 3.

AM2R is better than anything Nintendo has put out in the Metroid franchise since... Christ, probably Zero Mission. I understand the shutdown, but if this isn't a wake-up call for Nintendo with regards to what fans want with this series, there's no hope.

Wow, not surprising...but kind of surprising how quickly Nintendo jumped on this. Spies everywhere!

Why not pull it whilst it was in development tho? I suppose there is the case that they've let it release so fans can at least get their hands on it, but still need to do the right thing in their books by taking it down. I seriously doubt that would have happened tho - more likely they didn't know about it during development, heard about it after release, and immediately sent the order.

I suppose it's also worth considering Nintendo could still have contacted the dev(s) of this to work with them on something, but I cannot for the life of me see that happening. Hope I'm proven wrong, but I think only good can come of working with talented fans like this. I know for sure Shenmue 3 will be better off for working with the Shenmue HD creator, and SEGA has already proven that with Christian Whitehead. It's time to start thinking about the fans more than ever, and let's be honest - indie Metroidvanias don't require massive budgets. Certainly not by Nintendo's standards. They could quite easily be churning out 2D Metroids.

All this has done is re-emphasised just how out of touch with fans Nintendo is.
