Side-scrolling hero Shovel Knight has gotten his very own amiibo, which unlocks Nintendo exclusive features in his game.
Announced during the Nindies@Night event at the EMP Museum in Seattle, the figure allows fans to unlock exclusive content in Shovel Knight for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, making it the first indie title to support amiibo technology.
By scanning the amiibo figure on the Wii U version, it will allow players to take on Shovel Knight's quest, alongside a friend, in a new co-operative feature. For the 3DS and Wii U versions, the amiibo figure is used to customise/level-up our hero with new enhancements that can be used in exclusive amiibo challenge levels.
Developer Yacht Club Games also teased news that the amiibo would be supported in future Shovel Knight titles.

"Not only do we have a robust slate of indie games launching in the Nintendo eShop, but these games also contain features that can only be found on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Creating an amiibo that's compatible with all current and future Shovel Knight games shows that our strong relationship with independent developers is constantly evolving."
Damon Baker, Nintendo of America's Senior Marketing Manager of Publisher and Developer Relations."It's been a great honor to work directly with Nintendo, creating a Shovel Knight amiibo that sits beside their most beloved characters. We are elated to expand the world of Shovel Knight, and to keep developing unique game-play experiences on Nintendo's platforms."
