Iwata on Nintendo's Marketing Strategy

By Jorge Ba-oh 24.02.2015 3

How will Nintendo target marketing going forward? Iwata has answered some concerns from investors.

With the market and consumer habits ever-changing, Nintendo and other game-makers have had to adjust their own campaigns to keep up. Iwata was quizzed by an investor as to whether the company need a shake up in the marketing structure going forward.

Iwata admitted that, despite continuing to focus on TV campaigns, marketing teams are "conscious that they have to change." He outlined recent initiatives to use social media and Nintendo Direct to try new approaches.

He feels that "advertisements that are pushed on consumers are gradually losing their effect," and that Nintendo need to encourage consumers to "retrieve information at their own will."

The game-maker is in the middle of these changes, and Iwata feels that by "completing this transition process will be one of the prerequisites for regaining Nintendo-like profits by the fiscal year ending March 2017."

What do you think Nintendo need to do in order to drive more sales?

Demos. Demos of as much as possible. Can be short, but gotta get people hocked.
Adverts matter less and less in gaming. By all means do enough to make people aware of a product.
Some things - like showing clips of running around Xenoblades landscape - speak for themselves.
But many other games are very hard to sale by footage alone. Gameplay is Nintendos strength, but its not visual or audio...its an intangible thing that needs to be expirenced.

I would say they need MORE tv-campains. Maybe not for the games, but for the systems. I have seem extremely few Wii U commercials.

The difference between illusion and reality is vague to the one who suffers from the former and questionable for the one suffering form the later.
