Xenoblade Chronicles X Almost Needed More than One Disc on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Shingo Kawabata, producer of Xenoblade Chronicles X, has teased about the sheer scale of the amount of content on the Wii U disc.

With the game boasting a fair bit of content, with around five times the world of Xenoblade, it seems that the studio are squeezing as much as possible onto the Wii U's disc. Kawabata teased that at one point the team "were considering using more than one disk for the game" and how the project is "really, really close to the storage limit."

To enjoy playing, the enormous seamless map must load quickly (which was achieved through the hard work of our programming division), but we had help from Nintendo proper implementing a further improvement to what we had.

I believe we're going to reveal the details of that on the official page in the future, but to people considering purchasing the packaged version of the game, as one of the game's developers, I highly recommend you make use of this improvement.

What sort of improvements do you think Nintendo have made to fine-tune the Xenoblade Chronicles X experience?

Perhaps exceptionally they'll allow for an install on HDD of a good chunk of the game's content? I mean why would they suddenly recommend people buying the physical copy to "make use of an improvement" as if it was an option to accelerate loading times. I mean the way he puts it, it only makes me think of that. Like install isn't compulsory so that people without an external drive, or with too little space left in their console are not left out, but then for best performance, make use of that further enhancement over the basic way of doing things.

One question that pops to mind by this statement is how many layers does the disc have? Am I safe to assume they talk about double layer? If that is the case so is this game pretty HUGE.. around 50GB. Otherwise it is 25 GB which, while big, is nothing too spectacular.

The difference between illusion and reality is vague to the one who suffers from the former and questionable for the one suffering form the later.

The Japanese version of Xenoblade on Wii was single layer, we got dual layered discs in Europe and North America only to accomodate the two dubs (Eng and Jap).

I always thought Wii U game discs could not be dual layered though. I mean before launch and right up until the launch of the system it has been said that the game discs could hold up to 25GB max.

Yeah, but what makes me wonder is that the Wii U is fully capable of playing dual layered Wii  discs and Wii U discs are really nothing but Blu Ray discs w/o licensing fees so it should be fully possible to create dual layer discs. Also, from what I can see on the subject it says 25GB per layer and nothing about it being strictly one layered, which is what makes me wonder.

Hmm I didn't like Brawl being a dual layered disc. It churned and churned in my Wii...it sounded like it was having a heart attack.

Good to hear to that they are working to the max, although makes me feel like they are having to cut a few things here and there to make sure it's on the disc.
