According to former Sonic the Hedgehog 4 brand manager, a third episode was planned but cancelled.
Speaking to a fan, he outlined how the follow-up to the luke-warm platformer was initially intended to be released, but scrapped. He teased that music found in the second episode was supposed to be used in a cutscene that had been removed from the game, but he's unable to share any further details.
"The project will likely never see the light of day," he concluded.
With that in mind, and a poor reception to the first two episodes, it does sound like the popular hedgehog has had his day in the 2D/side-scrolling scene - for now.
