More snippets from the 1993 Nintendo marketing character guide highlights Wario as Mario's childhood bud.
In marketing documents, geared up by Nintendo of America to help push various IPs across the country, each of the main Mario characters where outlined. These storyline snippets aren't considered official or series canon - mainly referenced in the TV series and film - but are certainly interesting to see.
Mario
Born in Brooklyn, Mario grew up with a love of fixing things. He was destined to become a plumber and hero from the day he fixed a friend's broken squirt gun. Mario is a good natured, but unflagging in his crusade for justice and clean bathroom fixtures.
Princess Toadstool
The daughter of the Mushroom Kingdom lead a charmed life until the Koopas invaded. She wields the power of the white magic which, apart from being the only home for the reanimation of the Mushroom people, keeps her elegant gowns starched and clean even in Bowser's dark and filthy dungeon.
Luigi
Luigi spent his formative years handling toy plungers and spanners to his older brother, Mario. Ever since then he has remained a loyal companion. Although naturally shy and quiet, Luigi has been known to heroic challenges like his older brother.
Bowser
His evil magic is powerful, but it has not helped Bowser make friends. The fact is, even the other Koopas hate and fear him. He decided to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom because he could not stand the idea of happy things.
Toad
Toad is a heroic little Mushroom Retainer, an attendant of the Princess, who was off visiting relatives in the Fungus Federation at the time of the Koopa War. When he returned home, he found a great many bricks and horsehair plants that reminded him of his friends who had gone missing, along with his beloved Princess.
Yoshi
Yoshi, properly known as T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas, has been held captive in an egg until Mario (homonintendonus) bopped along and rescue him. Instantly, the young dinosaur and the plumber became friends. Together, they set out to rescue Yoshi's dinosaur pals from the wickedness of Bowser.
Wario
Let's make this perfectly clear: Wario is not Mario's evil twin. Wario was once Mario's childhood friend. Many were the afternoons that they unplugged culverts together on the way home from school. But Wario became jealous of Mario, bother for his skill with a plunger and his dashing good looks. Now that he has usurped Mario's castle, Wario feels that he might get a little respect and maybe an honorary degree in the Plumbing Sciences.
Kirby
He huffs and puffs and he blows his foes down. He's Kirby, the highly inflatable hero of several Nintendo adventures. Talk about your great exhalations. Kirby can float like a butterfly and sting like a Dedede. Certainly one of the most rounded characters in the video game history. Kirby stands to be one a roll fro a long time to come.
Samus Aran
Samus Aran, the boldest bounty hunter in space, is equipped with exotic weapons such as the Ice Beam, Morphing Ball and Screw Attack. Samus takes on the threat of space pirates on Zebes, other planets and battles the Mother Brain.
Pauline
Pauline became the first great video game damsel-in-distress when Donkey Kong grabbed her and pulled her into the spotlight back in 1981. Although she has not been active in video games for over a decade, when the chance game for her to recreate her historic roll, she jumped at it. "Quite Frankly", eh said, "life without Donkey Kong and Mario is pretty dull."
Also in the character guide were Legend of Zelda storyline ideas, with Nintendo of America suggesting that Link had almost killed Princess Zelda. Owch!
