Super Smash Bros. Melee Could Have Gotten 8 Player Support on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Super Smash Bros. producer Masahiro Sakurai recently told Japanese magazine Famitsu that eight player support was planned for Melee.

The Nintendo GameCube classic would have had support for up to eight players, had the hardware been suitable enough for the mode. Sakurai noted how it was "more than impossible", performance wise, and how even with the Wii U version it was "achieved just barely."

Nintendo and Bandai Namco had to make some compromises - including limited stage selection and removal of gimmicks.

Also in the report, Sakurai revealed reasons why Duck Hunt Duo was included as a character.

Do you think eight player support for Melee could have worked?

The 8 player stage choices confuse me. There are stages that are limited to 4 that are bigger than some of the 6 and 8 palyer stages. Can someone just hack to the game and make it so I can choose?

Methinks someone will end up doing that at some point. Difficult to tell why some stages didn't make the cut, could be camera issues, not so sure!

I'm thinking it's more do with what's going on in the background of certain stages, which may lag the game out if it had more then four players. That's really the only reason I can think of why there's only a limited amount of stages to choose from.
