Speaking at the Tokyo International Film festival, Shigeru Miyamoto spoke about the new Pikmin animated shorts.
The highly-regarded Nintendo designer has been working on a handful of CG-animated sequences based on the alien world of Pikmin. He believes the technology is now right to "get involved" with the animated side of the business, but he won't be shifting from games to movies in the long term.
Miyamoto currently doesn't have plans for future Pikmin flicks, but has left the door open for more and other Nintendo characters, he said in an interview with Reuters.
He worked on the films with an external CGI company; storyboarding with Flipnote 3DS, trying to highlight aspects of Pikmin that can't be doen in game - for example a scene with around 500 critters on screen at one time. It'll be used to be a "gateway" for newcomers to play Pikmin. The CGI is based on the game's models, but required "10 times the fidelity of that in the latest game."
There are plans on releasing the films worldwide as there isn't any need to localise, on Nintendo 3DS.
