Reggie on Wait Between Key Wii U Launches on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime was asked about the Wii U's quieter periods and how the company are addressing them.

The president of Nintendo of America was quizzed by IGN on a range of topics, and one that stood out in particular was whether Nintendo had enough in the bank to fill the long gap between major releases - for example Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze in February and Mario Kart 8 at the end of May.

Fils-Aime noted how the company are doing "much more second-party development" with games like Bayonetta 2 and Devil's Third, plus a bigger focus on independent developers. Instead of lumping these games in a separate indie section, "these developers love having their content merchandised in our eShop right alongside Mario and right along Zelda."

So second-party, independent content, along with great first-party content. Along with strong third-party as well, in terms of the support we're getting from Ubisoft, Warner Bros., and a number of the Japanese third-party developers. For us, that's how we have to mitigate this potential of longer wait times between product launch.

Do you think the wait times between major Nintendo launches are far too long, particularly on Wii U?

Love the waits in between, gives me time to actually finish games. There's so many games coming out these days I don't see how anyone could complain, unless maybe you literally only owned a Wii U or something.

Even just on WiiU I have trouble keeping up buying let alone finishing games I want. But that's probably my own fault because I also partake in things other than playing videogames ;D.

Yeah, that's sort of the same case for me, I like to focus on working on art and doing other stuff as well as gaming.

Same here, thank god for these breathers. I can barely keep my backlog from growing and that's with a lot of spare time for gaming. Starting from late August until the end of the year, there are eight games on my must have list, with two for September/October/November. I'll barely have time for the games in my backlog then, and they cost a decent chunk of money, too!

More releases gives you more choice though, whereas on Wi U, less choice means that you're tied to what comes out more, and don't really get to choose which AAA games you want to play. It's not a problem for me as I also don't have as much time for games and tend to enjoy a large panel of gaming genres but I know that is not necessarily the case for everyone and players owning other systems do not suffer the reduced catalogue.

Nevertheless you could argue that Wi U does enjoy the most exclusives, and potentially the better ones as well ^^.

Hence why I get on third party devs cases for not sharing with Nintendo. It doesn't HAVE to be an exclusive for Nintendo, but devs need to stop being assholes when they put the same game on microsoft & sony systems....yet totally ignore Nintendo. I can respect if a console company purchased exclusive rights to a series/game (Nintendo with Bayonetta, sony with FF for a while, Soulcalibur 3 *I think* & ms with certain bioware/ea, Bethesda & Epic titles) but they become total conTROLLing dicks when they deliberately ignore Nintendo EVEN when the demand for said game is there.

It is not wise to speak on subjects you do not know all facts about, nor is it smart to judge a game based on looks alone. PSN: Nintendo_Gamer 3DS: 4296-3029-7422

The issue for myself is well, there's nothing that fits my particular, selfish needs.  That's not to say games I don't enjoy such as Pikmin or Wind Waker HD are bad, it's that they don't hold my interest, making a drought, for people like yourself, easily bearable.  However, for some, it can seem like ages between releases.

Hell I don't even have a Wii U and I sympathize with people who only had it during the Spring 2014 drought.  There was literally nothing noteworthy released between early February and late May.
