Wii U 2D Horror RPG Ex Oblivione Announced on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Developer Cthulhi Games has shared a pitch for a Wii U exclusive 2D horror RPG known as Ex Oblivione.

In a series of tweets and updates on the game's Official Website, the first details on the game is pitched as a "massive open world" RPG that draws inspiration from The Legend of Zelda, Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil and Earthbound.

As a "balanced blend" of action and psychological horror, there'll be different crafting systems based on different characters including Nikola Tesla and Howard Phillips Lovecraft.

Throw in online co-operative multiplayer and player-designed characters for extra measure.

Nothing else is known about the project so far, but more details are expected shortly.

What are your thoughts on the Ex Oblivione pitch?

Hey Jorge, thanks for the spread. I've got lots of features planned for 'Ex Oblivione' that I'll be making public as I flesh them out. Also got some new sprite art and possibly some environment concepts coming out in the next major update to the site. In the meantime you guys can follow me on twitter where I talk about my progress pretty much daily, links in the article.

A horror RPG sounds intruiging!

That DOES seem like a very interesting prospect indeed Smilie !!

I DO wonder how character creation by the player would work though. Sprite design?? You've got to be darn good at it to make anything that looks good!

Character creation would work in the form of templates where you choose different features for the character as well as their abilities and what not.

Sounds like an exciting prospect that I'll be watching closely. I wonder what art direction you guys will take as it's a bit more of a challenge to express fear & danger on a 2D plane instead of 3D. Looking forward to seeing screenshots & a trailer or 2!! :-D

Actually I think it's eh complete opposite. The only thing I think 3d has above 2d in the ability to induce fear are the realistic models and being able to see in first person perspective. 2d can be just as scary by reducing field of vision, lighting, and other things that the player doesn't really think about first and foremost. Yes there will be graphical representation of " shock value material" but I don't like relying on that as the means to scare people, I'd rather strike the nerve at a deeper level

Good observation there, I never thought of it that way. I played Theresia: Dear Emile for DS which is a First Person Horror game that is VERY Dark, violent & down right sadistic so I know where your coming from. Well said, it seems like you guys know your stuff and what you want to give us so my faith in this game has grown even more. X)
