C3 Plays | Mario Kart 8 - Full Hands-on Video Preview on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Cubed3 recently popped down to London for an extensive hands-on preview session with Mario Kart 8 for Wii U.

The hands-on preview build was an expanded edition of the E3 version, allowing members of the press to leap onto a kart or bike, zipping through 16 of the 32 levels available in a selection of single or multiplayer Grand Prix cups. Rich, engaging HD visuals, fine tuned controls, mind-defying leaps through multiple axis; Mario Kart is in top form and the excitement is certainly building!

Is the bike you're using with Peach in the video one of those you said felt close to Mach Bike and others from Mario Kart Wii? Certainly does look like it.

Was one of them - this one handled a little bit like the Bullet Bill, there was another - the flame one - that had tighter turning, though still slightly off compared to MK Wii.

Improves top speed - 10 I think boosts the overall top speed, but they're positioned in difficult / wider places sometimes. Some items give 2x coins as well.

I'm really glad to see Nintendo implemented the coin gameplay mechanic in Mario Kart 8. That hasn't been in any of the console Mario Kart games since the original Super Mario Kart.

...now if we could only get a Double Dash!! mode. Smilie
