Final Fantasy III
...First time in the West?

There has been much furore over the recently announced GBA remakes of the first two Final Fantasy games, in the form of Final Fantasy I & II Advance due out in July over in Japan, but Square Enix could well have more GBA FF loving in the near future.

Recently interviewed by Japanese publications Dengeki GameCube and Nintendo Dream, Takashi Tokita - of Square Enix's Product Development Division 7 fame - let slip some news about the remake of Final Fantasy III from the NES, the only FF game so far to have not been released in the West in any form. After the WonderSwan version never saw the light of day due to technical difficulties, many believed the chances of seeing the game at all were practically zero.

However Tokita states in Dengeki GameCube, "FFIII is not going to remain sealed away for the rest of time, we're just carefully considering the timing of a release. Personally, if I have the chance, I'd like to get things moving, but because it's taking so long, people have big expectations - if we change it too much, people will complain, but if we just release it as is, we'll probably still get complaints..." Therefore it is clear that Square Enix is definitely still intent on releasing the game at some point, and the likely choice is now the GBA as opposed to the dying PSone that recently saw FF I & II bundled under the moniker of FF Origins, as well as a remake of the SNES game Front Mission (which has not left Japan yet, unfortunately).

Over in Nintendo Dream he added that "When we spoke with Nintendo, they were very keen for us to remake III." That would be an obvious coup for the Kyoto Company, so it is not surprising that that is the case. It is just a matter of 'when'...

On the issue of FF I & II Advance, Tokita stated that "There was the possibility for us to release these games as part of the Famicom Mini series, but we thought that the dungeons in II are hellishly difficult. so wouldn't be fun to play nowadays..." Which probably translates as - 'We thought we'd make more money this way!'

Finally, the man that worked on Parasite Eve and the Chrono series as well, added that he could definitely see himself producing a new GBA game in the near future. He mentioned that a brand new FF adventure is currently at the planning stages already, but perhaps a Chrono sequel could be underway as well? We can only hope!
