3D Effect is Why Zelda: A Link Between Worlds Doesn't Use the 3DS Stylus

3D Effect is Why Zelda: A Link Between Worlds Doesn

Eiji Aonuma, the chap behind all things Legend of Zelda, has confirmed why A Link Between Worlds uses button controls over stylus.

The move to Nintendo DS offered a departure for Nintendo in the traditional Legend of Zelda control, opting for a stylus/touch driven approach. The return to A Link Between Worlds has lead the team to venture back to button-presses and analogue movement.

The reason why? Aonuma cited the decision down to the 3D effect on the hardware as "it's hard to play with a stylus when you have 3-D on the top screen".

I'm really glad they dropped the stylus bullshit. I mean sure, the idea was good but... I prefer dpad+buttons every time.

I liked the stylus for things like determining the boomerang's flight path; that was very cool. But for regular movement and attacking, I prefer using the analog stick and buttons.

Given the 3DS hardware it was kind of inevitable. I'll miss the touch screen controls. They weren't perfect by any means, but they were rather good and brought with them some freshness (a bit of frustration too).

If they could someday merge the classic Zelda movement controls with handy touch screen controls that'd be great. Using the touch screen for things like boomerang and arrows was great, using it for absolutely everything wasn't as much imo.
